Mines north of town
Coal ground eight or nine miles north
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Highwall Miner #1 and a second surface mine at Virginia Point, both about 8.9 miles north of Tazewell. If your tractor or dump truck has been hauling off those benches, it may still be parked on a mine road, so tell us the gate it sits behind and who holds the key.
Further out, Coal Creek Prep Plant appears in Mine Safety and Health Administration records roughly 20.3 miles west of town. A truck that ran between the pits and that preparation plant can be collected at either end; give us the site name and a phone number for whoever works the gate that week.
Mine sites usually ask visitors to check in. Before we arrive, let the site office know a truck is being picked up, and keep the title and current registration with you rather than in the cab.
Quarry trucks from Pounding Mill and beyond
Pounding Mill Plant, a crushed-stone quarry, lies about 11.1 miles west on the Mine Safety and Health Administration list, and LIMESTONE DUST CORP. is about 12.8 miles to the north-east on that same register. Dump trucks and tri-axles that carry aggregate out of either one are the kind of equipment we buy in Tazewell County.
When you send photos of a quarry truck, include the body, the hoist, the tag axle if it has one and the plate on the door jamb. Those four pictures, plus the VIN, answer most of what we would otherwise phone you to ask.
Flat Top and Heniff
Flat Top yard and the terminal to the south
Flat Top, a rail yard about 15.6 miles north-east of town, is mapped in the North American Rail Network kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A tractor that shuttles loads to and from that yard can stay where it is parked while you arrange the sale.
To the south, about 18.9 miles out, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics records a liquid bulk terminal run by Heniff Transportation. If your sleeper or day cab pulled tankers through it, tell us which trailer it was paired with and send any inspection reports you kept from those runs.
Mostly small fleets, mostly interstate
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 37 active carriers based in Tazewell; 32 of them run interstate, 5 stay inside Virginia, and 25 operate as private fleets hauling their own goods. Whatever group you fall into, the paperwork we ask for is the same: the title in your name, the registration and the keys.
By cargo, the same federal census shows 14 carriers listing general freight, 11 listing machinery and large objects, 9 listing logs, poles, beams and lumber, and 6 listing farm supplies. A log truck, a lowboy tractor or a box truck from any of those lines is welcome here.
Among the 18 local carriers reporting mileage to FMCSA’s census, the median truck covers 15,917 miles a year, and the three biggest outfits in town each run 8 power units. A small operator selling one tractor out of two or three gets the same pickup at the yard as a larger owner.
Herds and payrolls
Dairy herds, beef cattle and Tazewell corn
Across Tazewell County the 2022 Census of Agriculture from USDA tallies 500 farms, and it ranks cattle first, then milk, then corn. Livestock haulers, milk tankers and grain trucks that served those farms can be picked up on the farm itself; tell us which barn or field gate to use.
Of the 3,289 jobs located in Tazewell during 2023, the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts place 108 in manufacturing and 66 in construction. A contractor’s dump truck or a plant’s straight truck sold from here needs the title, and any service records in the shop file make a useful addition to the photos.
If a title has gone missing, request a replacement from the state’s title agency before we schedule collection, and keep the receipt with the truck so the paperwork matches when we arrive.
The questions we get asked in Tazewell
- My dump truck is still sitting at a coal site above Tazewell. Will you pick it up from the mine?Highwall Miner #1 sits about 8.9 miles north of town by the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s listing, and we collect from sites like that. Clear the visit with the mine office and tell us which entrance to use.
- My log truck works the hollows around Tazewell. Is a timber rig something you take?FMCSA’s carrier census shows nine Tazewell outfits hauling logs, poles, beams and lumber, and a timber rig from any of them fits what we purchase. Along with the VIN, photograph the bunks, the loader if one is mounted, and the title front and back.
- The title to my Tazewell truck went missing years ago. Where does a seller here start? For a Tazewell County truck, the duplicate comes through the state’s title agency, so apply there before anything else. Then contact us with the VIN and registration so the pickup can be planned.
