Franklin County

The clearest case in this state of a posting field that overstates

The node attached to this place is the Jacks Mountain Quarry, worked for crushed granite by Rogers Group Inc with thirteen people on the federal register, its coordinate 5.47 miles from the centroid.

What it is known for in this data is the gap between two fields. Within ten miles the inventory records 77 structures, of which twelve carry the posting code — and only five are actually rated below legal loads. That is 15.6% of the circle on one field and 6.5% on the other.

This node is one of three named in the research as showing that divergence node by node rather than only in the aggregate, and of the three it is the one where the posting field runs furthest ahead of the ratings in proportion — twelve against five, where the others run twenty-two against fourteen and nine against four. Across Virginia the two fields agree on only 68% of posted structures, so a page reading the posting count here would report more than twice the restriction the ratings support. Every figure in this lane is read on the ratings, and this is the node that makes the case.

The roads out

Five real restrictions, and the binding one takes under two tonnes

Those five are not soft, which is the other half of the story. The nearest sits 2.96 miles from the Jacks Mountain Quarry gate — part of the 6.5% of this Franklin County circle that the ratings actually restrict — close enough to be on a working route rather than an occasional detour.

Its rating is 12.7 metric tonnes, about 14.0 US tons, which admits roughly 1.7 tonnes of granite over the 11.0 an empty tandem already weighs — against the twenty-five or so a legal 80,000 lb truck carries. Granite is dense enough that a body looks half empty at full weight anyway; past that crossing the load is a fraction of what the truck could legally hold.

So the honest summary is neither the alarming reading nor the reassuring one. There are fewer restrictions here than the signs suggest, and the ones that are real bite hard. Both facts have to be on the page or the page is misleading in one direction or the other.

Virginia paperwork

Three salvage tests in one chapter, and a rebuilt test that runs inside out

Beyond the roads, the title regime follows the truck rather than the route, and Virginia writes it unusually. Va. Code § 46.2-1600 sets three salvage thresholds where most states set one. A late model vehicle is salvage where estimated repair would exceed its actual cash value less its current salvage value. A recovered stolen vehicle acquired by an insurer is salvage above seventy-five per cent of actual cash value. A vehicle is nonrepairable above ninety per cent of its value before the damage.

Subtracting the salvage value makes the base smaller, so that first test is easier to trip rather than harder — the opposite of what comparing the bare percentages suggests. The rebuilt test then runs inside out: it measures the repair cost excluding damage to the engine, transmission or drive axle assembly, the exact inverse of Oklahoma, which counts only the suspension, motor, transmission, frame and structural components.

Late model is the current model year and the five preceding, or any vehicle whose value before the damage met the floor the section names, so an older truck outside that limb sits outside the salvage regime altogether. The repair figure also excludes towing, storage, a temporary replacement and diminished-value compensation — storage and diminished value being two items no other state on file names.

Weight is set at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127 — 20,000 lb on a single axle, 34,000 lb on a tandem and 80,000 lb gross — and the interstate limits are the same as the highway limits, so there is no inversion here to catch a driver out at the ramp.

What we buy here

The offer does not sort by truck type

Those rules apply to whatever you drive, and the offer does not sort by type either. Tandems and tri-axles off the granite work that Franklin County runs on, including whatever loads 5.47 miles out at the Jacks Mountain Quarry. Day cabs and road tractors on the runs around the lake and out towards the city. Flatbeds, box trucks, straight trucks and rollbacks out of the trades, plus service bodies and the crew pickups that go with them.

Whatever you drive, the offer doesn’t change. We buy all of them.

Getting it to us is the part that flexes. We can come to you and drive it away, or come and tow it; we can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow with nobody visiting at all, and you are welcome to bring it here instead.

We buy complete trucks. If the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Small things — a missing bumper — are fine.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked in Union Hall

  • Does it have to run?No. It does have to be complete — if the engine, transmission, doors, rear ends, drive shafts, wheels or anything under the hood have been removed, we can’t buy it. Rust is not a disqualifier.
  • Half the signs round here seem to be on bridges that are fine. That is close to literally true. Twelve structures within ten miles of the Jacks Mountain Quarry carry the posting code and five are actually rated below legal loads — proportionally the largest divergence of the three nodes named for it in this state. We read the ratings. The five that are real are hard, though: the nearest is 2.96 miles out and takes under two tonnes of payload.
  • Do you come out to Franklin County? We do. We can also buy it remotely and arrange the tow if that suits you better — the drive is our problem either way.
  • How am I paid?Cash or electronic payment. That is the whole list.
  • What about the title? We need one unless the truck is old enough that it never had one. A lost title has a counter replacement; where none exists there is a bonded route.

Why people call

None of those questions is why the phone rings. Retiring. A medical that went the wrong way. A hauling contract that finished. A tandem standing out a Franklin County winter 5.47 miles from the Jacks Mountain Quarry gate, insurance going out on something that is not turning a wheel.

Most of those aren’t happy reasons, and we don’t treat them like they are. Somebody wants a straight answer and the truck gone. That’s what we’re here for.

Virginia title rules read from the Code of Virginia in August 2026 — verify with Virginia DMV before acting on them. Salvage, nonrepairable and rebuilt definitions at Va. Code § 46.2-1600; weight limits at § 46.2-1122 and § 46.2-1127. Bridge figures come from the FHWA National Bridge Inventory 2025 files and are read on item 70 rather than item 41, because the two agree on only 68% of this state’s posted structures. A commercial floor is a MINIMUM inside a ten-mile circle: at 64.1% of the nodes measured in this work a tighter crossing lies between ten miles and twenty, so read it as an upper bound. This node is one of three named in the underlying research as showing the item-41 against item-70 divergence node by node; both counts are stated here and the ratings are used throughout. Headcounts are as reported to the federal mine regulator; 179 of the 349 Virginia rows in this work state none, and an absent figure is not a zero. Whether Virginia has any seasonal or frost provision was not determined for this node’s research batch and none is stated here. Information, not legal advice.
