Stone trucks from Red Hill Quarry and the Charlottesville Plant
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Charlottesville Plant, a crushed-stone quarry 6.8 miles east of University of Virginia. A dump truck or tri-axle that hauls aggregate from that plant can stay at the yard or job site where it last worked; give us that address and a name for whoever controls the gate.
Red Hill Quarry, another crushed-stone operation on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s register, lies 7.4 miles south-west. If your truck has moved stone out of Red Hill, take photos of the bed, the hoist, the cab and the VIN plate, and send them with the title so we can line both up before we schedule pickup.
Mill, slate and mine sites to the east
The Mine Safety and Health Administration records an industrial-mineral mine and mill, Sansom, 20.3 miles east of town. A truck sitting at that mill does not need to come back toward Charlottesville first; tell us it is there and we arrange collection on site.
James River Slate Company Inc, a dimension-stone quarry the Mine Safety and Health Administration places 23.1 miles south-east, cuts slab rather than gravel, so flatbeds and boom trucks are the likely equipment. Bring the registration card and any service log you kept for the boom when you describe the truck to us.
Freight off the rail yards east and south-east of University of Virginia
According to the North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the East Charlottesville rail yard is 2.5 miles east. A tractor or straight truck that shuttled freight to that yard is close enough that collection usually happens right where it is parked in the city.
Strathmore, a second yard in the North American Rail Network, sits 23.4 miles south-east. If your truck worked loads between Strathmore and Albemarle County and is now parked down there, send the exact location along with the odometer reading and VIN.
Cattle, nursery and horse farms
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 866 farms in Albemarle County, with cattle, potted flowering plants and horses at the top of its list. Livestock haulers, horse-trailer pickups and box trucks that carry nursery stock are all trucks we buy here, wherever on the farm they are kept.
If your farm truck is titled to a farm business or to a family member, have that name on hand; when the title itself is missing, Virginia’s title agency is where a replacement is requested before the sale goes through.
Jobs and the construction share
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 17,505 jobs in University of Virginia for 2023. Construction accounted for 272 of that total in the LEHD job counts, which works out to 1.6 percent of local employment in University of Virginia.
Contractor pickups, dump bodies and utility trucks from those construction crews tend to be parked at a shop or a residence rather than a terminal. Tell us which one, and whether the truck can be reached by a tow or a driver without moving other equipment first.
Contract trucks near the Rivanna Station post
Rivanna Station, a military installation listed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, is 10.2 miles north-east. A truck that served contract work at that post but is now parked off base on private ground is simplest to collect; tell us if it is still inside the gate.
For any truck from that side of the county, gather the title, the current registration and whatever maintenance printouts you have, and keep them in the cab or send copies ahead.
