Timber on the Chehalis
Log trucks and flatbeds on the harbor’s east side
Of the 16 active carriers that FMCSA’s carrier census places in Cosmopolis, six list logs, poles, beams and lumber as cargo, and six list general freight. If your truck is a log hauler or a flatbed that has run timber toward the harbor, send photos of the bunks, the stakes or the deck along with the cab and the frame.
Cosmopolis registrations in that FMCSA census also name farm supplies four times and machinery or large objects three times. A lowboy, a heavy-haul tractor or a feed truck from Cosmopolis is a truck we buy; tell us what it pulled and give us the VIN first, so the questions that follow are about your truck.
Fifteen of sixteen in-state
Short-haul trucks that rarely leave Grays Harbor
Fifteen of the town’s 16 carriers run intrastate only, with a single interstate operation, by FMCSA’s carrier census, and 14 of them are private fleets hauling their own goods. For a seller, that usually means the truck is parked at the shop, the mill or the yard it works from, and that is where we collect it.
Drivers on Cosmopolis registrations stay within a 100-mile radius in 18 cases against 4 who go farther, according to the same FMCSA records. The biggest fleet in town reports four power units, so most sellers here are owners with one or two trucks; have the registration and any service records together before you call.
Rail yard to Omni-Terminal
Aberdeen Yard, the Omni-Terminal and the Hoquiam fuel terminal
Two and a half miles west of town, the North American Rail Network maps the Aberdeen Yard. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics puts the Port of Grays Harbor’s Terminal 4, the roll-on/roll-off Omni-Terminal, 3.1 miles out in the same direction, with the port’s liquid bulk terminal at 3.9. A day cab that has shuttled loads between those docks and the rail yard can be picked up wherever it is parked along that strip.
Hoquiam’s petroleum product terminal is four miles west on the Energy Information Administration’s listing, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places the Grays Harbor Port District 13.4 miles north. If your tanker or fuel truck has worked those sites, say which ones when you contact us, and keep any inspection reports with the title.
Hauling from Wynoochee Pit East and the Hawks Superior Rock quarry
Wynoochee Pit East, a sand and gravel operation on Mine Safety and Health Administration records, lies 6.9 miles east of Cosmopolis. Southward, Hawks Superior Rock, a crushed-stone quarry, sits 18.3 miles away on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s records.
End dumps, belly dumps and tri-axle dumps that haul from pits like these are trucks we buy outright. Photograph the box, the tailgate and the hoist as well as the cab, and tell us whether the truck sits at a pit, a yard or your home.
Dairy and Christmas trees
Milk, cattle and tree farms around Cosmopolis
Around Cosmopolis and up the river valleys, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 369 farms in Grays Harbor County, led by milk, then cattle, then cut Christmas trees. Stock trailers, milk tankers and box trucks from those operations are on the list of what we purchase.
On a Grays Harbor dairy or tree farm, the truck’s title may carry the farm’s name instead of yours. Check whose name is on the title before you call, and if it is a business, have someone ready to sign for it.
The Auditor’s auto license desk on West Broadway
In Washington, titles go through the Washington State Department of Licensing, which works through vehicle and vessel licensing offices. Eight miles up the road in Montesano, the GRAYS HARBOR COUNTY AUDITOR AUTO LICENSE office at 100 W Broadway Ste 2, Montesano, 98563 is the closest one to Cosmopolis, 8.3 miles away on the Department of Licensing’s office list.
A Cosmopolis seller missing a title can file for the duplicate at that Montesano desk and let us know once it is under way. Bring the registration and your identification, and if a lender still shows on the title, have the lien release with you.
Washington’s heavy-duty emission rules for owners in town
The Washington Department of Ecology’s guidance lists Advanced Clean Trucks, as adopted in Washington’s Clean Vehicles Program, and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus under WAC 173-423-081; for both, enforcement is paused. Cosmopolis owners selling a diesel tractor today do not need to gather any compliance paperwork under either one.
An update to the regulatory guidance for Advanced Clean Cars II, Advanced Clean Trucks and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus is in force. Keep the engine label and the model year handy when you send photos of your truck.
