West of town: aggregate
Dump trucks and the Vashon pit
The Mine Safety and Health Administration registers Vashon Sand and Gravel, doing business as CalPortland, 4.8 miles west of Des Moines. A dump truck or transfer rig that has hauled aggregate off that operation can be sold from wherever it now sits; tell us the street address and whether a gate or yard manager stands between us and the cab.
Construction claims 441 of the 6,445 jobs counted in Des Moines for 2023, a 6.8 percent share in the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. With 101 construction establishments listed for the area in County Business Patterns, a seller here is often a contractor with one or two dump trucks rather than a fleet office, so have the title in the business name you registered and a few photos of the bed raised and lowered.
Rails east
Rail yards from Kent Auto-Ramp to Orillia
Two yards on the North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, lie within five miles: Kent Auto-Ramp 4.1 miles east and Orillia 4.7 miles north-east. If your day cab works those yards and stays parked near one of them, give us the lot location and a phone number for whoever holds the keys.
Seattle’s South Seattle rail intermodal ramp is 7.5 miles north-east, per the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and 24 Des Moines carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census list intermodal containers as cargo. If your tractor has pulled chassis off that ramp, send the VIN, the plate and a clear shot of the fifth wheel with your first message.
Another 25 local carriers name driveaway or towaway work in the same FMCSA census. Those trucks can be anywhere along the corridor when you decide to sell; a unit parked near Kent Auto-Ramp is no harder for us to reach than one on a Des Moines driveway.
Liquid bulk and fuel terminals nearby
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics places Quality Transload Inc, a liquid bulk terminal, 4.3 miles north-east, and Targa, another liquid bulk site, 8.4 miles south-west. Tractors that have spent their shifts on tank trailers between those points should come with whatever terminal access records or annual tank inspection sheets you still keep in the cab.
On the Energy Information Administration’s list of petroleum product terminals, Renton WA stands 6.5 miles north-east and Sound 8.3 miles south-west of town. When a fuel tractor is sold without its trailer, tell us so in advance and say where the trailer is staying, which keeps the pickup to the truck alone.
The Des Moines carrier roster
Of the 194 Des Moines carriers active in FMCSA’s carrier census, 112 keep their trucks inside Washington, 82 cross state lines, and 56 are private fleets moving their own goods. In that census, general freight is the cargo listed by 136 of them and fresh produce by 24; a reefer tractor or box truck from either kind of work is welcome, so say which body or trailer it ran with.
The biggest fleet registered here, according to that same federal census, has 35 power units and 50 drivers; the next two run 14 and 12 trucks. For an owner with one tractor or a handful, the paperwork list is short: the title, current registration, and the service records you already keep.
New registrations in FMCSA filings ran to 19 carriers in 2024 and 11 in 2025. A carrier that opened recently and is now parking a truck should still have the purchase paperwork; if a lien is listed on the title, bring the lender’s name and the payoff contact so the release can be arranged.
Model year medians from King County inspection stops
Of the 117 Des Moines-based trucks stopped at roadside inspection between September 2024 and August 2026, FMCSA records show a median model year of 2016, with 53 percent ten or more years old. Whatever the year on your title, include it with the make, model and engine in your first message.
Among 62 local carriers reporting mileage to FMCSA, the median tractor covers 32,500 miles a year. FMCSA filings also list 291 local drivers working within 100 miles and 207 going farther; if your truck is out on a long run when you call us, tell us its route and when it will next be parked.
Ecology’s paused truck rules
For a Des Moines tractor owner, the Ecology publication on the Clean Vehicles Program shows Advanced Clean Trucks enforcement on pause. That same Ecology publication gives the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus standards for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles a paused status too.
Ecology’s updated regulatory guidance for those rules is listed as in force. Selling a diesel truck in Des Moines does not involve any of these rules on your side; keep the emissions label on the engine readable and photograph it with the rest of the truck.
Farms and freight
Dairy, cattle, nursery stock and wholesale routes
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,604 farms in King County, with milk, cattle and foliage plants leading their sales. Livestock haulers and nursery delivery trucks out of those farms can be collected at the farm gate; let us know if the access road is gravel or gated.
Wholesale trade accounts for 370 local jobs and transportation and warehousing for 209 in the Census Bureau’s LEHD counts for 2023, while County Business Patterns lists 4 warehousing establishments. A straight truck retired from a wholesale route is something we take as readily as a sleeper, so describe the body type and the liftgate if it has one.
The questions we get asked in Des Moines
- Does a dump truck sitting by the CalPortland pit on Vashon need moving before a sale? The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Vashon Sand and Gravel operation 4.8 miles west of Des Moines, and we arrange collection where the truck is parked. Name the person at the pit who can let us in to the truck.
- Which details matter most for a container tractor working the South Seattle ramp? That ramp, listed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics 7.5 miles north-east, serves the 24 Des Moines carriers hauling intermodal containers in FMCSA’s census. Send the VIN, the plate, the engine model and photos of the cab, frame and fifth wheel.
- Is a Des Moines fleet of a dozen or more tractors bought together?FMCSA’s census shows the biggest Des Moines fleet at 35 power units and the next two at 14 and 12. Several trucks from one owner are handled as one sale; list each VIN and where each is parked.
- Does Advanced Clean Trucks in Washington block the sale of a 2016 diesel tractor from Des Moines?Ecology’s guidance lists enforcement of Advanced Clean Trucks and the Low NOx Omnibus in Washington as paused. Selling your diesel tractor needs only the title, registration and photos from you.
