Thirty carriers, most of them hauling their own goods
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 30 active carriers based in Mercer Island, and 24 of them run private fleets moving their own goods rather than freight for hire. If your truck belongs to a business like that, have the company’s name on the title match the name of whoever signs, or bring a letter showing who can sign for the business.
Of those 30, the same federal census lists 28 as intrastate operations and just 2 as interstate. A truck that stayed inside Washington usually carries Washington registration only, so have that registration card and the title together before you contact us, and send the VIN with your first message.
The biggest fleets on the island are small: the FMCSA census shows the top one at 6 power units with 4 drivers, the next at 4 units with 5 drivers, and a third at 3 units with 6 drivers. Selling one tractor or two out of a handful works the same way as selling the whole lot; list each VIN and where each one is parked.
Cargo on the island
Refuse trucks, movers and log haulers
General freight leads the cargo listed by Mercer Island carriers in FMCSA’s census, at 10 carriers, with garbage and refuse at 5 and household goods at 5. Roll-off and packer bodies, moving vans and box trucks all fit what we collect here; photograph the body and the chassis plate as well as the cab.
Four island carriers list logs, poles, beams and lumber as cargo, according to the federal carrier census. For a log truck or a flatbed with bunks, tell us whether the trailer goes with the tractor, and if it does, send the trailer’s title and plate along with the truck’s.
New registrations are few: FMCSA records show 2 carriers starting up on Mercer Island in 2024 and 1 in 2025. If your authority is recent and you are selling the truck you started with, the title and any lien release from the lender are the two papers to have in hand.
Van Asselt, Argo and the Seattle International Gateway
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, places the Van Asselt rail yard 4.1 miles west of Mercer Island, with a second Van Asselt listing 4.2 miles south-west. A day cab that shuttles out of those yards can be collected from the yard lot if you arrange access; give us a contact at the gate.
ARGO Yard, a rail intermodal ramp, sits 4.8 miles west on Bureau of Transportation Statistics listings, and the Seattle International Gateway ramp is 5.1 miles out in the same direction. Container chassis drivers working those two ramps should tell us whether the chassis is theirs or pooled, since only an owned chassis can be part of the sale.
Stone, cement, fuel
Quarry, cement plant and the Harbor Island terminal
Arcosa Specialty Materials Seattle #1890, a crushed-stone quarry, is 5.1 miles west of the island in Mine Safety and Health Administration records, and the agency lists the Seattle Plant cement works at 5.2 miles. Dump trucks and mixers from those sites can be picked up where they are parked; send photos of the bed or drum and the controls.
On Harbor Island, 5.7 miles west of Mercer Island, the Energy Information Administration places a petroleum product terminal. A fuel truck that loads there should come with its tank inspection paperwork and any hazmat placarding records you keep, so the history is clear before we arrive.
Port of Seattle’s Terminal 115, a roll-on/roll-off terminal, is 5.3 miles west on Bureau of Transportation Statistics records. If a truck is sitting inside a port terminal, tell us who controls the lot so the pickup can be set up with them.
Island job sites and the dairy farms of King County
Construction accounts for 400 of the 7,857 jobs located in Mercer Island in 2023, a 5.1 percent share on the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts, with wholesale trade at 132 and manufacturing at 71. County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau puts 53 construction establishments here. Contractor pickups with a dump body, flatbeds and small cranes are all trucks we collect from job sites and home driveways alike.
Across King County, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,604 farms, with milk, cattle and foliage plants as the leading products. A livestock hauler or a farm truck parked out in the county does not need to come to the island; send the address and the plate.
Ecology’s paused clean-truck enforcement
A Washington Department of Ecology publication lists enforcement of the Advanced Clean Trucks rule, as adopted in the state’s Clean Vehicles Program, as paused. The Department of Ecology publication shows enforcement of the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus standards under WAC 173-423-081 as paused too.
Ecology’s updated regulatory guidance on Advanced Clean Cars II, Advanced Clean Trucks and the Low NOx Omnibus is in force, per that publication. If you hold any emissions or engine certification labels for your truck, photograph them along with the door sticker showing the build date.
The questions we get asked in Mercer Island
- I run a garbage packer out of a Mercer Island business; would you take it?Five Mercer Island carriers list garbage and refuse as cargo in FMCSA’s census, and those trucks are among the ones we buy. Photograph the packer body, note the VIN and tell us whose name is on the Washington title.
- My tractor sits by the Seattle International Gateway ramp off the island; can you collect it there? The Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists that ramp 5.1 miles west of Mercer Island, and we collect from where the truck sits. Give us the lot address and someone who can let us in.
- Does it matter that my business only hauls inside Washington?Twenty-eight of the 30 carriers in FMCSA’s census for Mercer Island are intrastate, so a Washington-only registration is the usual case here. Have the title and that registration card ready.
- With Washington’s Advanced Clean Trucks rule on the books, can I still sell my Mercer Island diesel tractor?Washington’s Department of Ecology lists enforcement of Advanced Clean Trucks and the Low NOx Omnibus as paused in its publication. Tell us the truck’s model year and engine, and send the title.
