Gravel both sides
Sand and gravel pits a few miles from the valley floor
Canyon Resources, a sand and gravel operation the Mine Safety and Health Administration lists 3.4 miles west of Puyallup, and Fennel Resources, 4.1 miles east by the same agency’s records, put aggregate loading within a short drive in either direction. If your dump truck or end-dump tractor is parked at one of those pits between jobs, we can collect it there; send us the gate contact and the hours the yard is open.
County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau show 118 construction establishments in Puyallup, and the LEHD job counts for 2023 place 2,025 construction jobs here, 6.4 percent of the local total. For a truck that has worked those contracts, gather the title, the current Washington registration and any service log, and take photos of the bed, the hoist and the cab before you call.
FIFE, Belt Line and the Blair terminals to the north-west
Heading toward the tideflats, the North American Rail Network maps the FIFE rail yard 5.7 miles out and the BELT LINE yard at 6.7 miles, both north-west of town. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics adds the Pierce County Terminal intermodal ramp at 6.3 miles. A day cab that shuttles boxes between those ramps can be sold from wherever it is dropped; tell us the yard and whether the tractor is still hooked to a chassis.
Two roll-on/roll-off docks, the Port of Tacoma’s East Blair One terminal at 6.9 miles and Blair Terminal at 7.1 miles, appear in Bureau of Transportation Statistics port listings, along with Carlile’s Tacoma Trucking Terminal, a liquid bulk site 7.5 miles away. If your tractor has pulled tank or port loads there, keep its inspection reports and the VIN handy, since those are the first two things we ask for.
General freight, reefer and private fleets in the valley
Of the 849 active motor carriers registered in Puyallup under FMCSA’s carrier census, 545 haul general freight. By FMCSA’s operation codes, 522 run intrastate only and 327 cross state lines, while 346 are private fleets hauling their own goods. Whichever group yours is in, have the USDOT number ready along with the title so the paperwork lines up with the registration.
Food hauling shows up strongly in the same federal census: 130 carriers list refrigerated food, 130 list meat and 121 list fresh produce. If you are selling a reefer tractor or a straight truck with a refrigerated box, photograph the unit’s hour meter and note the trailer or body make in your message.
New authority keeps arriving too, according to FMCSA registrations: 66 carriers were added in Puyallup in 2025 and 45 in 2024. An owner-operator who started recently and is now stepping away can sell the tractor the same way a long-running fleet would, with the title, registration and a set of clear photos.
Inspection years and annual mileage across the fleet
Across 452 trucks inspected between August 2024 and August 2026, FMCSA roadside inspection records give a median model year of 2020 for carriers here, with 25.2 percent of those trucks ten or more years old. Whatever year yours is, the model year and engine make from the registration are what to send us first.
Per truck, carriers reporting to FMCSA’s census show a median of 48,398 miles a year, measured across 294 Puyallup carriers. FMCSA filings from those carriers list 2,512 drivers working within 100 miles and 1,257 going beyond that. Note the current odometer when you photograph the dash, and tell us whether the truck sleeps at home or at a terminal.
Fleet sizes vary widely in the carrier census, which lists three Puyallup operators with 378, 377 and 162 power units. If you are releasing several units from a fleet at once, list each VIN and where each truck is parked, and we will plan collection yard by yard.
Warehousing and wholesale work around Pierce County
In 2023, the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts recorded 31,502 jobs in Puyallup, and 2,654 of them, 8.4 percent, were in transportation and warehousing. Manufacturing added 836 jobs and wholesale trade 512 in the LEHD figures. A box truck or tractor tied to a warehouse here is often parked at a dock; give us the dock address and a contact who can release it.
County Business Patterns lists eight warehousing establishments in the city. If your truck is kept inside one of those buildings or behind a fenced lot, tell us when the gate is staffed so the pickup can be arranged around it.
Flowers, cattle and hemp across Pierce County
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,347 farms in Pierce County, and the top products named there are cut flowers and cultivated greens, cattle, and hemp. A livestock hauler, a flatbed or a farm straight truck from one of those operations can be collected at the farm, so send the road name and any directions past the barns.
For farm-plated trucks, check that the title is in the name of whoever is signing, whether that is you or the farm. Photos of the cab, frame and tires, plus the registration, are enough to start.
Washington’s heavy-duty emission rules
A Washington Department of Ecology publication lists enforcement of the Advanced Clean Trucks rule, as adopted in Washington’s Clean Vehicles Program, as paused. The same Department of Ecology document lists the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus standard under WAC 173-423-081 as paused as well.
Updated regulatory guidance for Advanced Clean Cars II, Advanced Clean Trucks and the Low NOx Omnibus is in force, according to that Ecology publication. If you have emission labels or engine certification papers for your truck, include photos of them with the rest of the paperwork.
The questions we get asked in Puyallup
- Our end-dump sits at the Canyon Resources pit west of Puyallup between jobs. Could you collect it from that site? The pit is a fine place to collect from. The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Canyon Resources 3.4 miles west of town and Fennel Resources 4.1 miles east, and we collect from pits like those once the operator’s gate contact is in hand.
- My refrigerated straight truck hauls produce around Pierce County; would Big Ugly Truck take that?Reefer tractors and refrigerated straight trucks are on our list, and FMCSA’s carrier census shows 121 Puyallup carriers hauling fresh produce and 130 hauling refrigerated food. Send the title, registration and photos of the reefer unit.
- The tractor was dropped near the Pierce County Terminal ramp. Must I haul it back to the valley before you collect it?It can stay put: the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places that intermodal ramp 6.3 miles north-west of Puyallup, and pickup is arranged where the tractor sits. Name the company or person who controls that lot so we can coordinate the gate.
