Frederickson yard and the Thun Field gravel pit
Frederickson Yard, a rail yard just 2.4 miles east along the Frederickson industrial corridor, appears on the North American Rail Network that the Federal Railroad Administration maintains with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A tractor that shuttles loads to and from that yard is often parked somewhere along the Frederickson industrial strip rather than at the owner’s house, so give us the street address and the name of whoever controls the gate before we schedule the collection.
Thun Field Pit, a sand and gravel operation listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, lies 6.1 miles east, and Canyon Resources sits 7.8 miles to the north-east on the same agency’s roll. Dump trucks and end-dump tractors from those pits can stay right at the pit; tell us whether a loader or the site operator needs to clear access, and photograph the bed, the cab and the VIN plate so we know which configuration we are looking at.
North to Tacoma
Tank terminals, the auto dock and TacSIM
Two liquid bulk terminals turn up about ten miles north in Bureau of Transportation Statistics listings: Truck-Rail Handling Inc at 10.3 miles and Arrow Reload Washington Inc. at 10.4. If your tractor has pulled tank trailers between those transloads, note whether the trailer goes with it or stays behind, and keep any terminal access paperwork with the title.
Per the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the Port of Tacoma’s Marshall Avenue Auto Facility, a roll-on/roll-off terminal, is 10.8 miles north, and the Tacoma South Intermodal Yard (TacSIM) ramp sits at 11 miles. Car haulers and container chassis tractors working that waterfront can be picked up wherever they last dropped; send the odometer reading, the VIN and a photo of the registration so the paperwork matches the unit.
General freight, lumber and car haulers out of Spanaway
Of the 281 Spanaway-based outfits active on FMCSA’s carrier census, general freight is the cargo listed by 172. Box trucks, day cabs and sleepers from those outfits are the core of what we buy here, and the quickest way to start is a VIN plus clear photos of each side.
In the FMCSA filings, 48 carriers declare machinery and large objects, 48 declare motor vehicles and 44 declare logs, poles, beams and lumber. Lowboys, rollbacks, car carriers and log trucks all fit; for a log truck, tell us whether the bunks and stakes stay on the tractor, and for a lowboy tractor, whether the trailer is part of the sale.
Of those 281, FMCSA records show 185 running intrastate only, 96 crossing state lines and 123 operating as private fleets hauling their own goods. A private-fleet truck often carries a company name on the door; have the registration and the title in the same legal name before we collect it.
Roadside checks, odometers and owner-operators near Thun Field
FMCSA roadside inspection records from 30 August 2024 through 23 August 2026 cover 160 trucks tied to Spanaway carriers, with a median model year of 2018 and 41 percent at ten or more years old. Whatever the year on your title, the same three items get the sale moving: the title, the current registration, and any service records you have kept.
Sixty-nine local carriers reported annual mileage on the FMCSA carrier census, and their median truck logged 35,297 miles. The FMCSA carrier census also shows 338 drivers who stay within 100 miles of base and 255 who go farther. Tell us roughly where the truck spends its week, since a unit sitting at a jobsite in the foothills is collected differently from one parked in a Spanaway driveway.
New operators keep arriving: FMCSA’s census registers 30 new Spanaway carriers in 2025 and 16 in 2024, while the largest local outfit runs 15 power units with 15 drivers. If you are a one-truck owner-operator who has wrapped up, the title in your own name and a photo ID are what we ask for at collection.
Contractors, warehouses and Pierce County growers
Spanaway held 6,571 jobs in 2023 by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts; construction accounted for 275 and transportation and warehousing for 73. Contractor-owned dump trucks, flatbeds and service bodies are welcome; if the truck is registered to a business, bring the business name exactly as it appears on the title.
Around Spanaway there are 133 construction firms and 4 warehousing firms on the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns roll. A truck parked at a yard owned by one of those firms can be collected on site, provided someone on site knows it is leaving that day.
Washington’s emissions rules and your paperwork
Washington’s Department of Ecology guidance, in its publication on the Clean Vehicles Program, shows enforcement paused for both the Advanced Clean Trucks rule and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus standards. That guidance update itself is in force, so keep a copy of any emissions certificate or a photo of the engine label with the truck’s file.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,347 farms across Pierce County, with cut flowers and cultivated greens, cattle and hemp at the top of the list. A farm-plated straight truck or cattle hauler from one of those operations is something we take as well; check that the farm registration and the title carry matching names.
The questions we get asked in Spanaway
- My dump truck is still at a gravel pit east of Spanaway. Does a dump truck sitting by the Thun Field scale have to move before you come?Thun Field Pit sits 6.1 miles east of town on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s roll, and a truck parked at a pit like that can be collected where it stands. Give us the pit name, the gate contact and a photo of the VIN plate.
- I hauled containers out of TacSIM. Does the truck need to come back to Spanaway first?TacSIM is listed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics 11 miles north of Spanaway, and we can meet the truck in Tacoma just as easily. Send the yard address and the name on the title.
- What do you need from a log truck owner in Spanaway?Forty-four Spanaway carriers on FMCSA’s census haul logs, poles, beams or lumber, and from each the essentials are the same: the title, the registration, photos of the tractor and bunks, and a note on whether the trailer is included.
- The truck is registered to my private fleet, not to me. Can a fleet-titled truck still be sold?Spanaway has 123 private fleets on FMCSA’s carrier census, and selling a company-titled truck is routine; whoever signs needs authority to sign for the business named on the title.
