Two gravel pits a short haul from Main Street
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Sumner Pit And Plant, a sand and gravel operation, 2.5 miles south-east of town, with Fennel Resources, another sand and gravel site, 5.4 miles to the south. A dump truck or end-dump tractor that works between those two pits is the kind of truck we collect from a pit yard or a driveway in Sumner, so tell us which of the two it is parked at.
Alongside those pits, 88 construction establishments operate across Pierce County, says the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. If your truck hauled aggregate to job sites for one of them, have the title in your name and a few clear photos of the bed, cab and VIN plate ready before you call.
From the Tacoma tideflats to the Auburn rails
Seven miles west, the Port of Tacoma’s East Blair One (EB1) Terminal and its Blair Terminal at 7.3 miles are both roll-on/roll-off terminals in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics listings. A day cab that has spent its shifts moving between Sumner and the Blair waterway can be picked up at the port-side yard where it parks; give us the gate contact and the lot address.
Pierce County Terminal (PCT), a rail intermodal ramp 6.4 miles west, appears in the same Bureau of Transportation Statistics records, and the North American Rail Network places Auburn Yard 4.2 miles north of town. Container tractors that shuttle between that ramp and the Auburn yard can be listed with us by VIN and current registration; send both in your first message.
For tankers, Carlile’s Tacoma Trucking Terminal is a liquid bulk terminal 7.4 miles west, per the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. If your tractor pulled tank trailers out of it, mention whether the trailer is part of the sale or stays with you.
Freight, lumber and produce carriers in Sumner
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 185 active carriers here: 103 hauling general freight, 35 carrying machinery and large objects, 31 moving logs, poles, beams and lumber, and 27 carrying fresh produce. Whichever of those your truck did, tell us the cargo it was set up for and photograph the bunks, deck or reefer unit along with the cab.
Of those carriers, 125 run intrastate only and 60 cross state lines, while 109 are private fleets hauling their own goods, again on FMCSA’s census. When a Sumner company owns the truck outright as part of its own fleet, the person who signs the title over has to be someone the company lets sign for it, so ask the owner or office manager first.
The same federal census lists one Sumner fleet at 227 power units with 197 drivers, another at 190 units with 118 drivers, and a third at 98 units with 60 drivers. Owner-operators and fleets of a few trucks sell to us the same way: one title per truck, one set of photos per truck.
Odometers and inspection stickers
Local loops to Tacoma and the longer runs
Across 70 carriers reporting mileage, FMCSA’s census gives a median of 30,033 miles a year per truck, and it records 825 drivers working within 100 miles and 756 going beyond. Have the odometer reading handy when you get in touch, whether the truck stayed on local runs to Tacoma or went further afield.
Of 510 Sumner trucks stopped for roadside checks from August 2024 to August 2026, the median carried a 2020 model year and 28.4 percent were a decade old or more, FMCSA’s inspection records show. Whatever the model year of yours, send the inspection reports and service records you have kept with it.
Docks, job sites and Pierce County flower farms
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023 show 18,651 jobs in the area, with 4,471 in transportation and warehousing, 2,587 in manufacturing, 2,480 in construction and 1,963 in wholesale trade. Box trucks and tractors that served warehouse docks around Sumner can be collected from the warehouse lot itself, as long as someone there knows we are coming.
Pierce County had 1,347 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, led by cut flowers and cultivated greens, cattle and hemp. A farm truck or livestock hauler parked on a county property is collected where it sits; send the field or barn address and a note on whether the lane takes a tow truck.
County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau put 32 warehousing establishments in Pierce County. If your truck ran for one of them under a lease, check who holds the title before you contact us.
The questions we get asked in Sumner
- Can my dump truck stay put at Sumner Pit And Plant until you arrive? At 2.5 miles south-east of town, per the Mine Safety and Health Administration, that gravel pit is close enough to town that we collect the truck where it is parked on site. Let us know which foreman or office opens the pit gate and what hours trucks are allowed in.
- Can you collect a tractor from the Port of Tacoma terminals? The Blair Terminal is 7.3 miles west of Sumner in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics records, and a truck parked near it or the EB1 Terminal can be collected there. Pass along the terminal lot location and a phone number for the person holding the yard key or badge.
- Will you take a Sumner log hauler with its bunks still on?Thirty-one Sumner carriers on FMCSA’s census haul logs, poles, beams and lumber, and those trucks are on our list. Photograph the stakes and bunks, the cab interior and the VIN plate, then send them with the name shown on the title.
- Which documents should go with a Sumner tractor when it leaves?Sumner trucks inspected on FMCSA roadside records have a median model year of 2020, and for any year we ask for the same things: the title, the current registration, the odometer reading, and photos of the cab, frame and VIN.
