Ninety-four carriers on the University Place roster
General freight is the cargo 61 of University Place’s 94 active motor carriers put on their FMCSA carrier census filings. A box truck, straight truck or tractor hauling mixed loads around Pierce County fits that profile, so send the VIN, a few photos of the cab and the body, and the registration when you reach out.
Household goods appear on 16 of those registrations in the FMCSA carrier census, which puts moving vans and furniture trucks on the University Place list. If yours carries a box with a lift gate or ramp, photograph that equipment too and tell us whether the box is part of the sale.
Lumber and steel also show up: 14 carriers here list logs, poles, beams and lumber, and 13 list metal sheets, coils and rolls, according to FMCSA. For a flatbed or log truck, note the trailer or bunks that go with it and have the title for each piece in hand, since a tractor and a trailer are titled separately.
Small outfits
Owner-operators and fleets of a handful of trucks
Of the carriers in town, 72 operate intrastate only and 22 cross state lines, while 38 are private fleets moving their own goods, per FMCSA’s carrier census. A contractor or a shop that owns a truck for its own deliveries can sell it to us the same way a for-hire carrier does; the business name on the title just needs to match whoever signs.
The three biggest operations registered in University Place hold 8, 6 and 5 power units in the FMCSA census, with 6, 6 and 4 drivers. If you are selling more than one unit from a small fleet like that, list every VIN together so we can arrange a single collection from your yard.
FMCSA records two new carriers registered here in 2025 and four in 2024. A newer operation may still be paying off its tractor, so if a lender holds the title, have the lienholder’s name and your account number ready and we will work out the payoff paperwork with them.
The 2018 median on University Place inspection stops
University Place trucks stopped for FMCSA roadside inspection between September 2024 and August 2026 numbered 94, their median model year was 2018, and 38.3 percent carried a model year ten or more years back. Whatever the year on yours, give us the exact model year, make and engine when you contact us.
Roadside reports also tie a truck to its VIN. If yours was inspected during that window, keep any inspection report with the title and service records; they belong in the folder you hand over at collection.
Mileage and range
Short local routes and longer runs out of Pierce County
Eighteen carriers here report mileage to FMCSA, and their median comes to 18,750 miles per truck in a year. Read the odometer before you call, and send a photo of the dash, so the figure on the paperwork matches the truck.
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 125 drivers here working within 100 miles of base and 94 who go beyond it. If your truck is out on a longer route when you decide to sell, tell us where it will be parked next; it does not have to come back to University Place for us to collect it.
Rail yards, fuel terminals and the West Sitcum docks
The North American Rail Network places the Union Station rail yard 5.9 miles east of University Place and the Bay yard at 6.2 miles. Trucks that shuttle to those yards often sit at a shop or lot near the tracks between loads, so give us that address and the name of whoever can open the gate.
Two Tacoma petroleum product terminals sit about 6.1 miles east on the Energy Information Administration’s list, and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics adds two liquid bulk terminals close by: Truck-Rail Handling Inc at 6.2 miles and Arrow Reload Washington Inc. at 6.5. For a tank truck or a tractor that pulled tankers there, tell us what product it hauled and include any tank test paperwork you have.
At 7 miles out, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics lists the Port of Tacoma’s West Sitcum Terminal, a roll-on/roll-off dock, alongside the West Sitcum rail intermodal ramp. A day cab that moved containers between that ramp and local warehouses can be collected from the port side; just confirm the lot allows a pickup there.
Low clearances and Washington’s clean truck rules
The National Bridge Inventory records six bridges in University Place, two of them load posted, and one under 14 feet: the Day Island Bridge Road crossing over Day Island Lagoon, at 12 ft 4 in. If your truck is parked on Day Island or behind that bridge, mention it so we send equipment that clears it.
Washington’s Department of Ecology guidance lists enforcement of Advanced Clean Trucks and the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus (WAC 173-423-081) as paused, while its updated regulatory guidance for those rules is in force. Have the engine family label photographed with the rest of your pictures, since the engine year is what those rules refer to.
Construction crews, wholesalers and Pierce County farms
Of the 6,419 jobs located in University Place in 2023, construction held 337 and wholesale trade 165, by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. County Business Patterns from the Census Bureau adds 117 construction establishments, so dump trucks, flatbeds and service bodies all belong on the list of trucks we collect here; tell us what body is mounted and whether attachments go with it.
Out in the wider county, USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,347 farms in Pierce County, with cut flowers and cultivated greens, cattle and hemp at the top. A stake bed or livestock hauler parked on a farm outside town can be picked up where it sits, so send the farm address with your photos.
The questions we get asked in University Place
- My truck sits on Day Island, past the lagoon bridge. Will your tow rig clear that crossing? The National Bridge Inventory lists the Day Island Bridge Road crossing at 12 ft 4 in, so tell us that is where the truck is and we plan the collection around that clearance.
- I haul out of the Port of Tacoma. Do I need to bring the truck back to University Place?West Sitcum Terminal sits 7 miles east of town on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics list, and we collect from wherever the truck is parked, port lots included, once you confirm who can release it.
- Our business hauls only its own goods, not for hire. Does that change how we sell a University Place truck?FMCSA’s carrier census shows 38 private fleets in University Place, and any of them can sell; the person who signs needs authority for the business named on the title.
- Which documents should a University Place owner gather before the pickup? With 94 local trucks checked in FMCSA roadside inspection records over two years, many owners here already hold inspection reports; put those with the title, registration, service records and clear photos of the truck.
