CalPortland and Bethel Pit gravel trucks
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists VASHON SAND AND GRAVEL, operating as CalPortland, 2.7 miles south-east of the town centre. A dump truck or tractor that has spent its shifts on that pit’s haul roads may well be parked at the site itself, so tell us whether it sits inside a gate and who holds the key.
Bethel Pit, a second sand and gravel operation, appears in Mine Safety and Health Administration records 8.9 miles west. If your truck worked between the two pits, send the VIN, a photo of the door sticker and a shot of the bed or body, and say which site it now sits at so the collection is booked to the right yard.
Port, rail and fuel terminals to the south
Across the water to the south, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics places the Port of Tacoma’s TOTE Maritime Alaska roll-on/roll-off terminal 9.5 miles from Vashon and lists Tacoma itself, 9.7 miles away, as a strategic seaport. Tractors that pulled trailers on and off those ships can be collected wherever they are parked near the docks; a gate contact and the yard address are what we need first.
The North American Rail Network, kept by the Federal Railroad Administration with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, shows the TMBL-OCCIDENTAL rail yard 9.6 miles south, and East Sitcum Terminal is a rail intermodal ramp 9.8 miles out on the Bureau’s own list. Container chassis work out of those yards means a day cab, so photograph the fifth wheel and the cab interior along with all four sides.
Two liquid terminals sit 9.8 miles south-east: SOUND, a petroleum product terminal in Energy Information Administration records, and Targa, a liquid bulk terminal per the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A tank tractor that served either one should come with whatever site paperwork you kept, since loading-rack inspection slips help us match the truck to its history.
Freight, lumber and refuse off Vashon
Of the 78 active Vashon-based motor carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census, general freight is the cargo line on 31. Box trucks and straight trucks doing local delivery fit that cargo line, and a current registration card plus the title in your name are the two papers that settle most questions before collection.
Machinery and large objects appear on 17 carrier registrations in the same federal census, logs, poles, beams and lumber on 13, and garbage and refuse on 11. A lowboy tractor, a log truck with its bunks or a roll-off hauler is the kind of unit those entries describe; tell us what body or trailer goes with it so we know what we are loading.
According to FMCSA, only 3 of the 78 operate interstate while 75 run intrastate, and 62 are private fleets moving their own goods. For a private fleet selling one unit, the person who signs the title must be the one named on it, so check whether the truck is titled to the business or to you before we set a date.
Vashon outfits running a handful of tractors
The three biggest Vashon fleets on the FMCSA census run 7, 5 and 5 power units, with 6, 2 and 2 drivers. An owner with five tractors and two drivers often has units parked rather than working, and we can collect one or several from the same lot on a single visit.
Driver radius figures from the federal carrier census put 131 drivers within 100 miles and 41 beyond it. Ten carriers that reported mileage show a median of 5,977 miles per truck a year in FMCSA’s records, so have the odometer reading handy along with the VIN when you call.
New registrations stay small here: the carrier census logs 3 new Vashon carriers in 2025 and 1 in 2024. If yours is one of those recent outfits and the truck still carries a lender’s lien, tell us the lender’s name at the start so the title release is handled alongside the sale.
Shops, plants and builders around Vashon
Of 2,808 jobs located in Vashon in 2023, the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts put 391 in manufacturing, 198 in construction and 92 in wholesale trade. Flatbeds, stake trucks and delivery vans serve that mix, and a photo of each side plus the dash with the ignition on gives us what we need to start.
Vashon’s construction trade shows up as 52 separate establishments when the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns tallies the area’s contractors. A contractor’s dump truck or crane truck parked at a job site or behind a shop can be picked up there; send the address and note any height or weight limit on the driveway.
Dairy titles, Ecology rules and lost paperwork
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 1,604 farms across King County, with milk, cattle and foliage plants leading the list. A milk tanker, cattle hauler or nursery straight truck from one of those operations is welcome; farm-plated trucks need the title and the farm registration together.
Washington’s Department of Ecology guidance shows enforcement paused on the Advanced Clean Trucks rule and on the Heavy-Duty Low NOx Omnibus standards under WAC 173-423-081, while its updated regulatory guidance is in force. Keep the emissions label on the engine readable and photograph it, since it records the engine family and model year.
If the title has gone missing, Washington’s title agency issues a replacement to the registered owner, and that request should start before we book a collection. Lost registration is easier: bring the VIN and your ID and the duplicate can be ordered the same way.
The questions we get asked in Vashon
- My dump truck is parked at the CalPortland pit south-east of Vashon. Is the gravel pit gate a workable pickup spot for a dump truck? That pit sits 2.7 miles south-east of town on the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s list, and we collect from it directly. Name the pit foreman or gate contact and where on the site the truck stands.
- I ran a tractor out of the Tacoma docks. Can it be picked up near the TOTE terminal? The TOTE Maritime Alaska terminal at the Port of Tacoma is 9.5 miles south of Vashon according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and a truck parked near it can be collected in place. Send the yard address and the name of whoever controls access.
- My business is a private fleet of three trucks. Is selling a single truck out of it possible?FMCSA’s carrier census shows 62 of Vashon’s 78 carriers running as private fleets, and selling a single unit from one is routine. The title has to be signed by the business named on it, so have an authorised signer ready.
- My Vashon truck’s title has disappeared. How do I replace a missing title before selling a Vashon tractor?Washington’s title agency issues replacement titles to the registered owner, so apply for one before we arrange collection. Tell us when you have filed and we will plan around it.
