Private fleets and interstate authority around Clayton
Of the 40 active carriers that FMCSA’s carrier census places in Clayton, 23 are private fleets carrying a business’s own goods. A private-fleet truck often sits in the yard of the business that owns it, so tell us which yard and who holds the gate key when you get in touch.
Of those 40 Clayton carriers, 29 are registered for interstate work and 11 stay inside Delaware, according to the same federal census. A tractor with interstate authority behind it may carry an apportioned plate, so have the cab card and the title together when you send us the VIN.
Registrations keep arriving: FMCSA’s census records 3 new Clayton carriers in 2024 and 2 more in 2025. If yours is one of those young outfits and the truck is still titled to a lender, say so up front so the lien release is part of the plan from the first call.
Dry bulk, machinery and Kent County produce
General freight is the most common cargo on the federal registrations here, claimed by 24 Clayton carriers in FMCSA’s census, while 9 list dry bulk commodities. A dry-bulk hopper or a dump body is a different listing from a van, so photograph the trailer or body along with the tractor and its plates.
Seven local carriers in FMCSA’s registrations declare machinery and large objects, and seven more declare fresh produce. For a lowboy setup or a reefer unit, send the reefer hours or the trailer’s VIN plate photo alongside the tractor’s, since each one is its own titled piece.
Across the federal census, 17 Clayton carriers reported annual mileage, and the median works out to 14,000 miles per truck. Put your own odometer reading in the first message next to the VIN, and we check both against the title.
Sand, gravel and the Bay Road corridor
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists Bay Road Plant #7, a sand and gravel operation, 9.9 miles south-east of Clayton, with Tarburton Pit another 10.6 miles out in the same direction. A tri-axle that has hauled aggregate between those pits stays where it is parked; give us the plant address and we come to it.
Further south, Porter Sand & Gravel, Inc. appears in MSHA’s mine register 22.5 miles from town as an industrial-mineral mine. If the truck is kept at a pit rather than at home, check whether the site needs a visitor sign-in or safety escort before collection and pass that on to us.
Kent County’s construction trade adds to the same traffic: the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns counts 20 construction establishments in the area. Contractors who keep a dump truck or flatbed on a job site can sell it from there, as long as someone on site can show us the truck and its paperwork.
Grain trucks on Kent County roads
Kent County holds 770 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, with corn first among its crops, then soybeans and wheat. Farm trucks used at harvest are often registered differently from road tractors, so check whether yours carries a farm plate and have that registration ready with the title.
A grain truck that only comes out between planting and harvest is usually parked in a barn or shed off the road. Tell us the farm lane, whether a loaded tow vehicle can turn around there, and whether the bed or hoist has paperwork of its own, and the visit can be planned around the field schedule.
Wholesale jobs and the rail yards to the north
The Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts for 2023 put 782 jobs in Clayton, and wholesale trade accounts for 422 of them, or 54 percent. Box trucks and day cabs that serve a distribution business are usually titled to the company, so the person signing the sale needs to be an officer or carry written authority from one.
Up the road, the North American Rail Network maps the PBF Delaware City Refinery rail yard 22.3 miles north of Clayton and the Bear Car Shop 23.1 miles north. A truck parked near either yard can be collected where it sits; send the street address and a photo of the gate so the driver finds it.
Dover Air Force Base and the training site
Dover Air Force Base lies 13.5 miles south-east of Clayton on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ list of military installations, and the NG River Road Training Site is 24.9 miles north. Owners stationed at either one who are being reassigned can sign over a truck before they leave, provided the title is in their name and in hand.
If you have already moved and left the truck with family in Clayton, name the person holding the keys and make sure the title travels with your signature where the state’s title agency requires it. A lost title is replaced through the state’s title agency, and starting that request early keeps the sale from stalling.
