Hay, feed and livestock haulers around Portales
Of the 199 active carriers that FMCSA’s carrier census places in Portales, 149 list grain, feed and hay as a cargo they carry, and 57 list livestock. If your tractor has pulled hopper or flatbed loads of hay, or a cattle pot between feedlots, tell us which trailer it ran with and whether the trailer is part of the sale.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 638 farms in Roosevelt County, with milk, corn and cotton at the top of its list. A feed truck or milk hauler parked at a dairy or a farm yard outside town can stay right where it is; send us the road and the gate details and the collection is planned around the farm’s day.
Farm supplies appear on the cargo lists of 35 Portales carriers in the federal carrier census. For a truck that has delivered seed, fertilizer or equipment to farms around the county, put the title and the current registration in one folder before you call; those are the first two papers we ask to see.
Small outfits, private fleets and a few larger yards
The federal carrier census splits Portales operators into 93 interstate and 106 intrastate carriers, and 79 of the total run private fleets that haul their own goods. A private fleet truck belonging to a farm or a business can be sold by whoever holds the title, so check that the name on the title matches the seller before we talk.
According to FMCSA’s carrier census, the three biggest fleets based in Portales run 60, 26 and 15 power units. If you manage one of those yards and want to sell several units together, list each VIN with its odometer reading and we will look at each truck on its own.
Ten carriers registered in Portales during 2025 and five during 2024, by FMCSA’s carrier census. An owner-operator who started recently and is now selling should have the purchase paperwork and the title together, even if the lien is still being cleared.
Short farm runs and long freight miles from Portales
Drivers working for Portales carriers split between 186 who stay within 100 miles and 258 who go beyond, FMCSA’s carrier census shows. If your truck spends its weeks on long runs, tell us where it will be parked between trips, since we come to the truck rather than asking you to bring it home.
Among 78 Portales carriers that report mileage to the federal carrier census, the median truck covers 21,045 miles a year. Read the odometer and photograph the dash when you send pictures of the cab, the frame and the tires, so the numbers you give match what we see.
Build years of the Portales trucks pulled aside for roadside checks
Portales carriers had 162 of their trucks stopped between September 2024 and August 2026, and FMCSA roadside inspection records put the middle model year of that group at 2016. Give us the model year, make and engine when you first get in touch, and any service records you have kept.
Just under half of those Portales trucks, 48.77 percent in the roadside inspection records, carried a model year ten or more years back. Whatever the year of yours, we buy it the same way: title, registration, photos and the location where it sits.
Cannon AFB, the BRP plant and the Clovis yard
Cannon Air Force Base lies 14.6 miles north of Portales on Bureau of Transportation Statistics listings, with Cannon AFB Site 2 at 16.1 miles. A truck that has hauled to base contractors may sit on a yard near the gate; tell us who controls access so the pickup can be cleared in advance.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the BRP Processing Plant, a sand and gravel operation, 15.9 miles north-east of town. If your dump truck or end-dump tractor has hauled aggregate from that pit, mention the body type and send a photo of the bed raised and lowered.
Further on, the North American Rail Network places the Clovis rail yard 17.4 miles north-east of Portales. A tractor that drays loads to and from that yard can be collected wherever it is parked in Clovis; give us the street address and a contact on site.
Jobs in Portales that keep trucks busy
Manufacturing held 357 of the 4,752 Portales jobs in 2023 and transportation and warehousing held 284, by the Census Bureau’s LEHD job counts. Box trucks and day cabs serving those employers are as welcome as sleepers; send the body length and liftgate details with your photos.
Construction accounts for 173 Portales jobs in the 2023 LEHD figures, and County Business Patterns counts 42 construction establishments. For a dump, water or flatbed truck from a building contractor, have the title in the company’s name and a signed authorization from whoever can sell company assets.
The questions we get asked in Portales
- Does a hay truck sitting on a Roosevelt County farm have to be hauled into Portales first?Roosevelt County has 638 farms in USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, and plenty of trucks live on them. Leave yours on the farm, send the road name and gate directions, and we arrange collection there.
- Do you buy livestock and cattle haulers?Livestock appears on the cargo lists of 57 Portales carriers in FMCSA’s carrier census, and those tractors are part of what we purchase. Tell us whether the cattle trailer goes with the tractor or stays behind.
- Will you pick up a tractor parked by the Clovis rail yard instead of in Portales? The Clovis rail yard sits 17.4 miles north-east of Portales on the North American Rail Network, and we collect from yards around it. Send the Clovis street address with a phone number for whoever holds the yard key.

Have the title, the registration, any service records and clear photos ready, and make sure the person selling can sign for the title holder.
