New Mexico's freight is mining, rail and the border. Coal mines work at Borrego Pass, San Mateo and Ojo Amarillo, metal mines at Tyrone and Cobre, and there is a cement plant at Tijeras. Intermodal ramps run at Albuquerque and Santa Teresa, a liquid-bulk terminal at Albuquerque, and rail yards at Albuquerque, Clovis, Gallup and Deming.

Getting anything large out of that valley runs into a rule about time rather than weight. Our sources differ on the afternoon window — one gives 16:00 to 19:00, another 16:00 to 18:00 — and both are reported rather than reconciled, because picking one would be guessing.

Under NMSA § 66-7-410 gross weight is set by the distance between the first and last axle of a group of two or more consecutive axles: 34,320 lb at 4 feet, 39,000 lb at 10 feet, 53,100 lb at 19 feet, 63,000 lb at 30 feet, 85,500 lb at 55 feet and 86,400 lb where that distance is 56 feet or more. Distances are measured to the nearest even foot, with an exact half rounding up. Two further limits sit under it, both from § 66-7-409 rather than the spacing table. No one axle may impose more than 21,600 lb, which is above the federal 20,000, and no one wheel may carry more than 11,000 lb — a constraint stated per wheel rather than per inch of tyre width. The federal record grandfathers New Mexico at 86,400 lb gross, 21,600 lb on a single axle and 34,200 lb on a tandem, with the available routes given as all Interstate highways.
