Tyrone, Chino and the gravel pits south-east of town
The Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the Tyrone Mine, a metal mine, 10.3 miles south-west of Silver City, and the Chino Mines Co Mine 10.8 miles to the east. A tractor or heavy hauler that has worked either property may still be parked near a mine gate or a contractor yard on that side of town. Give us the address and the name of whoever can let us in, and we collect it where it stands.
Closer in, Limestone Quarry/Fabtec 3, a crushed-stone quarry, sits 7.9 miles south-east according to MSHA, with a sand and gravel Portable Plant 8.4 miles out in the same direction. Dump trucks and end-dump tractors from those pits sell the same way: send the VIN, the title and photos of the bed, the frame and the cab, and the questions that follow are about that one truck.
Intrastate haulers and private fleets around Silver City
FMCSA’s carrier census counts 72 active motor carriers based in Silver City; 44 operate intrastate only, 28 cross state lines, and 44 run private fleets carrying their own goods. If your truck belongs to a business that hauls its own materials, have the company’s registration and the name of the person who signs for the business ready before we talk.
Cargo listings in that same federal census put general freight at 38 local carriers, machinery and large objects at 29, and both logs, poles and lumber and metal sheets, coils and rolls at 18 each. Lowboys, flatbeds, log trailers and the tractors that pull them are all trucks we buy here, so tell us which trailer the tractor was set up for and include a photo of the fifth wheel or hitch.
New registrations show 7 carriers joining in 2025 and 3 in 2024, again per FMCSA. A recently formed outfit selling a truck should check that the title is in the company’s name and not still in an owner’s personal name; New Mexico’s title agency is the office to ask if it is not.
Distances and fleets
Short runs, long runs and the fleets behind them
Silver City carriers report 96 drivers who stay within 100 miles and 111 who go beyond it, on FMCSA’s carrier census. Whichever pattern your truck followed, it can be collected wherever it finished its last run, whether that is a yard in Grant County or a lot several states away.
Across the 15 local carriers that report mileage to FMCSA, the median works out to 12,500 miles per truck a year. Read the odometer before you call and have the figure with the VIN; those two numbers start every conversation we have about a truck.
At the top end, FMCSA’s carrier census shows a Silver City fleet of 48 power units run by 20 drivers, then fleets of 24 units with 14 drivers and 22 units with 22 drivers. An owner letting several trucks go at once can send one list of VINs and locations, and we work through them together rather than one by one.
Tractors stopped at roadside, by model year
Silver City carriers had 28 trucks pass through FMCSA roadside inspection records from late October 2024 to late August 2026, and the median model year among them was 2017.5. In the same FMCSA inspection records, twelve of those 28, about 43 percent, were ten or more model years old.
Older or newer, a truck from this fleet is sold with the same paperwork: the title, the current registration and any inspection or service records you kept. If a roadside inspection report is in the cab, include it with the photos.
Bridges and clearance
Low clearance and open bridges
Of the 21 bridges the National Bridge Inventory records for Silver City, none carries a posted load limit. The National Bridge Inventory shows one structure under 14 feet: US-180 crossing over Mississippi Street, with 13ft 11in of clearance.
If your truck is parked on a street or yard reached by passing under the highway at Mississippi Street, mention it when you give us the location. A tall load or a tractor with a sleeper and stacks is moved with that low crossing in mind.
Contractor yards, cattle and goats
LEHD job counts from the Census Bureau put 6,157 jobs in Silver City in 2023, including 204 in construction, 73 in manufacturing and 51 in wholesale trade. Builders are a real presence too: 42 construction firms keep an address in Silver City, by the count in County Business Patterns. Dump trucks, flatbeds and service trucks from those contractors can be sold from the job site or the shop yard.
USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counts 334 farms in Grant County, with cattle, goats and horses the leading products. A ranch hauler or livestock tractor parked on a county road or behind a barn needs only a clear address and a gate code; have the title signed by whoever is named on it.
Emission rules in force and a missing title
New Mexico’s Advanced Clean Trucks rule and its Heavy-Duty Omnibus engine standard are both listed as in force in the state’s administrative code. Neither stops you from selling a truck you already own and title in New Mexico.
Title questions go to New Mexico’s title agency. If the title for a Grant County truck is lost, start a duplicate there before you contact us, and keep the registration card and a lien release if a lender was ever on the title.
The questions we get asked in Silver City
- Can a dump truck parked at the Fabtec limestone pit stay where it is for pickup? The Mine Safety and Health Administration places Limestone Quarry/Fabtec 3 about 7.9 miles south-east of Silver City, and the truck can be collected right there. Name the quarry contact who opens the gate and we arrange collection with that person.
- Will you take a log truck that has hauled poles and beams out of the Silver City area?FMCSA’s carrier census lists 18 Silver City carriers hauling logs, poles, beams and lumber, and their tractors and log trailers are trucks we buy. Send the VIN, the title and photos of the bunks and frame.
- Is a taller truck a problem to move out of Silver City? The National Bridge Inventory shows one structure under 14 feet in town, US-180 over Mississippi Street at 13ft 11in, and no load-posted bridges. Mention the truck’s height and where it is parked, and the route is planned around that one crossing.
- The title to my Grant County tractor is missing; who issues a replacement?Silver City trucks are titled through New Mexico’s title agency, so a duplicate title is requested there. Start that request first, then contact us with the VIN and the registration.
