El Paso is a border city whose trucks leave the state more than they stay in it: more than half the 4,000 carriers based here run interstate, and most of their drivers work beyond a hundred miles. The rail yards at Dallas Street, Mopac and Biggs Field, the intermodal ramp and the fuel terminals by Fort Bliss are the freight map, and one job in eighteen inside the city is in transportation and warehousing.
A yard here holds a border drayage tractor, a box truck on the paper and beverage routes, a dump truck from the McKelligon Canyon quarry or the Victorio and McCombs sand pits, a cotton truck in the fall from the county's nine thousand acres, and the semi truck with a sleeper that runs the interstate in both directions.

El Paso runs the Texas statute, the federal 80,000 pounds and the state axle figures the Texas page sets out, over 620 bridges inside the city, ten posted for load and one below fourteen feet, eastbound US 62 over the Union Pacific tracks and the canal at thirteen feet eight, which a tridem quarry truck clears with inches to spare.
