Lubbock is the cotton capital of the South Plains, and the trucks say so: Lubbock County plants forty-seven thousand acres of cotton, after general freight the cargoes its carriers declare most are machinery, grain and feed, dry bulk and farm supplies, and two in three of the carriers based here work Texas only. Five rail yards, the container yard among them, and two fuel racks sit inside the city.
So a Lubbock yard holds a cotton truck in the fall, a grain hopper, a machinery hauler, a winch truck for the oilfield, and the semi truck with a sleeper on the interstate. The biggest fleet based here runs about two hundred power units, so most of those trucks belong to small outfits.
