San Antonio is a quarry town with a military base the size of a county. Seven crushed-stone quarries and two cement plants sit on the north side, from Beckmann and Huebner Road to the 1604 plant at Selma, and Joint Base San Antonio keeps fleets of its own. More than 7,200 carriers are based in the city, and three in four of them keep to Texas.
Mixers, dump trucks, machinery haulers, winch trucks bound for the oil patch, steel haulers, tankers off the Kirby racks, garbage trucks, buses and the sleeper-cab semi truck on the interstate lanes make up a San Antonio lot, and the median carrier reports 36,000 miles a year on each power unit, a long-haul figure for a city this size.
