Winston-Salem is a plant town that still has its rail: one job in fifteen inside the city is in manufacturing, the Winston-Salem East and North Winston yards and the Norfolk Southern transload sit inside the city, and half the carriers based here work North Carolina only. North Carolina allows more on a tandem axle than the federal 80,000-pound table does, as the North Carolina page sets out. Winston-Salem's own list is 344 bridges, eighteen posted for load and four below fourteen feet, the lowest at seven feet eleven where Davis Road crosses NC 74, which no truck uses, so the postings on the county roads are what a steel hauler here reads.
