M998 Series — Cargo / Troop Carrier

Base HMMWV 4×4 Light Tactical 6.2L / 6.5L Detroit Diesel Open Top / Soft Top

The M998 is the base HMMWV configuration — a cargo and troop carrier in open top and soft top configurations. The foundational platform from which all other HMMWV variants are derived. Powered by the 6.2-liter and later 6.5-liter Detroit Diesel V8 engine with a 3-speed GM TH400 automatic transmission. The M998 series designation covers a broad family of variants including the M998 cargo, M1025 and M1026 armament carriers, M1035 soft top ambulance, M1037 shelter carrier, and others. The most commonly found HMMWV configuration in the surplus civilian market. We purchase all M998 series trucks in any condition regardless of title status.

1985 — Present

M1097 / M1113 — Expanded Capacity

Heavy HMMWV 4×4 Expanded Payload 6.5L Turbodiesel Up to 13,500 lb GVW

The M1097 Heavy Variant HMMWV and M1113 Expanded Capacity Vehicle are uprated versions of the base HMMWV with higher GVW ratings — accommodating heavier payloads, additional armor packages, and more demanding mission requirements. The M1113 uses the turbocharged 6.5-liter Detroit Diesel producing approximately 190 HP. GVW of up to 13,500 lbs on fully armored configurations. These heavy variants were developed in response to the HMMWV’s vulnerability to IEDs in Iraq — additional armor substantially increased vehicle weight beyond the original M998 design limits. We purchase all heavy HMMWV variants in any condition.

1985 — Present

HMMWV — Specialty Variants

15+ Configurations Ambulance / TOW / AVLB Armament Carrier Electronic / Special Mission

The HMMWV is available in more than 15 configurations covering virtually every light tactical vehicle role in the U.S. military. Key variants include the M997 and M1035 ambulances, M1025 and M1026 armament carriers (with ring mount for heavy weapons), M1043 and M1044 armament carriers with supplemental armor, M1044A1 with TOW missile system, M1037 and M1042 shelter carriers, and various electronic warfare and special mission variants. Surplus examples from all configurations regularly appear in government auctions — DRMO (Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office) sales, online government surplus auctions, and private dealers. We purchase all HMMWV variants in any condition, any configuration, titled or not.

Hummer H1 — Civilian HMMWV

Discontinued 2006

The civilian Hummer H1 — produced by AM General 1992–2006. Street-legal, DOT compliant, VIN-equipped. Strong collector market. All purchased.

1992 — 2006

Hummer H1 — All Configurations

Civilian Street-Legal 6.2L / 6.5L Detroit Diesel / Duramax 11,818 Total Built Open Top / Wagon / Pickup / Slantback

The civilian Hummer H1 was produced by AM General from 1992 to 2006 — a street-legal, DOT-compliant version of the military HMMWV with a full 17-digit VIN, proper lighting, seatbelts, and emissions controls. Only 11,818 were built over 14 years — making every H1 a relatively rare vehicle. Available in four body styles: Open Top (HMCO), Hard Top/Wagon (HMC4/HMCS), 2-door Fleet (KSC2), and 2-door Pickup (XLC2). Powered by the 6.2L Detroit Diesel (1992–1995), 6.5L naturally aspirated Detroit Diesel (1996–2000), 6.5L turbodiesel (2001–2002), and the 6.6L Duramax turbodiesel (2002–2006). General Motors purchased the Hummer brand name in 1999 while AM General continued manufacturing. GM stopped marketing the H1 after 2005 but AM General produced a final 2006 run. All H1 configurations command significant collector premiums. We purchase all Hummer H1 trucks in any condition.

1992 — 2002

H1 Alpha — Pre-Duramax Era

6.2L / 6.5L Detroit Diesel GM TH400 / 4L80-E Auto Early Production

Early Hummer H1 production from 1992 through approximately 2002 used the GM/Detroit Diesel V8 diesel engine family — the 6.2-liter naturally aspirated through 1995 and the 6.5-liter in various states of tune through 2002. These early H1s used the GM TH400 3-speed automatic and later the 4L80-E 4-speed automatic. The pre-Duramax H1s are the most commonly found in the used market and have a devoted following among off-road and overland enthusiasts who prefer the simpler, more wrench-friendly powertrain. Parts availability for the 6.2L and 6.5L engines is strong through GM diesel parts suppliers.

2002 — 2006

H1 Alpha — Duramax Era

6.6L Duramax LB7/LLY Allison 1000 5-Speed Auto Most Capable H1 Final Production

The Duramax-powered H1 — introduced for the 2002 model year with the 6.6-liter LB7 Duramax turbodiesel paired with the Allison 1000 5-speed automatic — is considered the most capable and desirable H1 configuration. The Duramax provides significantly more power and torque than the older 6.5L Detroit, dramatically improving the H1’s highway performance and towing capability without sacrificing off-road ability. The LLY Duramax followed for later production. Final model year was 2006. Duramax H1s command a substantial premium over earlier examples in the collector market. We purchase all Duramax H1 trucks in any condition.

About AM General

AM General Corporation traces its roots to American Motors Corporation’s General Products division — hence AM General. The company became independent in 1971 and established itself in Mishawaka, Indiana, where all HMMWV production continues today. AM General produced over 5,400 buses from 1974 to 1979 before pivoting to the vehicle that would define the company’s legacy.

In 1979, AM General engineers began development of the HMMWV — a radical new platform to replace the Army’s aging M151 jeep and related light tactical vehicles. In March 1983, AM General was awarded the initial production contract for 55,000 HMMWVs valued at $1.2 billion — the largest tactical wheeled vehicle contract in U.S. history at the time. Production began in 1984 with first deliveries in 1985. The HMMWV’s high-profile service in Operation Desert Storm in 1991 — visible on television screens around the world — transformed the vehicle from a military tool into a cultural icon and convinced AM General to produce a civilian version.

HMMWV vs Hummer H1 — Key Differences

  • Military HMMWV — No DOT compliance from factory. No proper civilian lighting, seatbelts, or emissions controls as manufactured. No standard 17-digit VIN. Titling varies by state — some states allow registration, others do not. Most surplus HMMWVs are sold as off-road only unless properly converted for street use.
  • Civilian Hummer H1 — Full DOT/FMVSS compliance from factory. Standard 17-digit VIN. Street-legal in all 50 states. Built to meet federal motor vehicle safety standards with proper lighting, seatbelts, and emissions controls.
  • Appearance — The two vehicles look nearly identical on the outside. The differences are primarily mechanical and regulatory rather than visual.
  • Value — Civilian H1s command a significant premium over demilitarized HMMWVs in the used market due to their street-legal status and lower production numbers.

Buying a Surplus HMMWV

Surplus military HMMWVs enter the civilian market through several channels — DRMO (Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office) government surplus auctions, GovPlanet, IronPlanet, and private military surplus dealers. Most surplus HMMWVs are sold demilitarized with a DD Form 1348-1A in lieu of a title. Titling a demilitarized HMMWV for street use requires state-specific processes and, in many cases, significant modifications to meet DOT standards. We purchase surplus HMMWVs in any condition with or without proper titles — contact us for any HMMWV of any configuration or paperwork status.
