Current Models β ACX, ACMD, DC-64 & ACTT
In ProductionAutocar’s current severe-duty vocational lineup β all custom-built to order in Birmingham, Alabama. All purchased.
Autocar ACX Xpeditor
The Autocar ACX is the flagship of the current Autocar lineup β a severe-duty Class 8 cab-over-engine truck introduced in 2008 as the successor to the Xpeditor WX. The ACX brought major improvements over the WX including a completely redesigned cab with B-pillar corner rear windows for improved visibility, an ergonomically designed driver environment, and integrated body controls β all firsts for the segment. Available in 4×2, 6×4, and 8×4 configurations. Powered exclusively by Cummins diesel engines (ISX and later X15). Available with CNG (compressed natural gas) from the factory β the only OEM to offer this directly. The ACX is the dominant truck in the North American refuse collection market.
Autocar ACMD Xpert
The Autocar ACMD is America’s only medium-duty cab-over-engine truck manufactured domestically β introduced in 2012 by special request from customers needing an American-made Class 7 vocational cab-over. The ACMD was initially Class 7 only but later expanded to include Class 8 4×2 and Class 8 6×4 configurations. Powered by Cummins L9 and X12 diesel engines. Three-man crew seating available. Smaller and more maneuverable than the ACX β ideal for refuse, recycling, street service, and applications where the larger ACX is too big for tight urban environments. The only product of its kind made in the United States.
Autocar DC-64
The DC-64 was introduced in 2021 as a revival of the historic Autocar DC conventional truck β first introduced in 1939. The all-new DC-64 is built from the ground up with a galvannealed steel cab, 160,000 PSI chassis frame, and best-in-class driver visibility for conventional cab severe-duty applications including refuse roll-offs, dump trucks, concrete mixers, and concrete pumps. The DC-64 was the first Autocar to carry the refreshed Autocar bowtie logo β 100 years after the logo was originally introduced in 1919. Designed with direct input from vocational operators. The iconic split grille and round headlights pay homage to classic Autocar design. Powered by Cummins X15.
Autocar ACTT Terminal Tractor
The Autocar ACTT is a purpose-built terminal tractor designed for the demanding cycle of yard and port operations β backing trailers, spotting containers, and moving freight in distribution centers, ports, and intermodal facilities around the clock. Custom-engineered specifically for the severe-duty stop-and-go cycle of terminal operations where uptime is the only metric that matters. The E-ACTT is the all-electric zero-emission variant β one of the first purpose-built electric terminal tractors available in North America. We purchase all ACTT configurations in any condition.
Autocar E-ACX (Electric)
The Autocar E-ACX is the all-electric zero-emissions version of the ACX refuse truck β introduced in 2022. Unique in the market for allowing customers to specify their own battery supplier and chemistry rather than being locked into a single manufacturer’s battery system. This “zero-compromise” approach means customers can optimize for their specific duty cycle, route length, and charging infrastructure rather than adapting to a one-size-fits-all solution. Targeted at municipal refuse fleets in California and other zero-emission mandate markets. We purchase all E-ACX trucks in any condition.
Xpeditor & WX Era β Pre-2008
DiscontinuedThe Autocar Xpeditor and WX era from the Volvo ownership period. Still very common in refuse and vocational fleets. All purchased.
Autocar Xpeditor WX
The Autocar Xpeditor WX was the predecessor to the current ACX β a severe-duty Class 8 cab-over primarily used for refuse collection and concrete pumping. The WX was produced through approximately the 2010 model year when it was redesigned and relaunched as the ACX. During the Volvo ownership era (early 1990sβ2001), the WX and the Volvo WX were sold simultaneously as nearly identical trucks β Autocar had been acquired from Volvo Group as part of a market consolidation arrangement. Powered by Cummins ISC, ISM, ISL, and compressed natural gas engines depending on configuration and year. The WX is still commonly found in refuse and vocational fleet applications throughout the country. We purchase all WX examples in any condition.
Xpeditor WXLL
The Xpeditor WXLL was a long-wheelbase low-profile variant of the WX Xpeditor β the “LL” designation indicating Long Low configuration. Used in refuse collection applications where a lower cab height combined with extended wheelbase provided the body volume needed for automated side-load and front-load refuse operations. Produced during the Volvo ownership era before the 2001 brand transfer to Grand Vehicle Works Holdings. Less common than the standard WX in the used market. We purchase all WXLL examples in any condition.
Classic Autocar β DC Series & Earlier
Classic / VintageHistoric Autocar trucks from the founding era through the mid-20th century. Significant collector and historical interest. All purchased.
Autocar DC Series (Classic)
The original Autocar DC conventional truck was introduced in 1939 as Autocar’s flagship heavy duty conventional β the direct ancestor of the current DC-64. The DC designation stood for the company’s premier severe-duty truck line. Produced through the 1970s and 1980s in various configurations. Available with Cummins, Caterpillar, and Detroit Diesel engines. The classic DC is identifiable by its distinctive split grille design and round headlights β features that inspired the design of the current DC-64. Classic DC series Autocars are becoming collector vehicles as surviving examples dwindle. We purchase all classic DC trucks in any condition.
Autocar A-Series & AT Series
Autocar’s mid-century conventional truck lineup covering the A-Series and AT Series from the 1930s through the 1970s. These trucks represent the heart of American commercial trucking during the post-war industrial boom β used in construction, logging, mining, and freight operations throughout the country. The AT64F was a notable heavy duty 4×4 configuration used in military and severe-duty civilian applications. Any surviving A-Series or AT-Series Autocar is of significant historical and collector interest. We purchase all examples in any condition regardless of completeness.
Early Autocar β Founding Era
Autocar was founded in 1897 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania β making it the oldest continuously operating motor vehicle manufacturer in the United States. In 1899, Autocar built America’s first truck β a two-cylinder gasoline-powered vehicle. The company built early automobiles and commercial vehicles through the early 20th century, transitioning exclusively to trucks by the 1910s. World War II military production included the U-7144T and U-8144T 4×4 military trucks in significant numbers. Any surviving Autocar from the pre-war era is of exceptional historical significance. We purchase all early Autocar vehicles in any condition.
About Autocar Trucks
Autocar, LLC is the oldest continuously operating motor vehicle manufacturer in the United States β founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1897 as The Autocar Company. Autocar built America’s first truck in 1899. The company is the only American-owned and operated original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of trucks β meaning Autocar designs, engineers, and manufactures its trucks in the United States without foreign parent company ownership. Autocar trucks are manufactured in Birmingham, Alabama.
Autocar’s business model is fundamentally different from other truck manufacturers. Rather than offering a catalog of standard configurations, Autocar custom-engineers every truck to the customer’s exact specification. This customer-collaborative approach has made Autocar the preferred choice for the most demanding vocational applications β particularly refuse collection, where the constant stop-and-go cycle, heavy body loads, and all-weather operation demand a truck built specifically for the work rather than adapted from a highway tractor.
Autocar Ownership History
- 1897β1953 β Independent Autocar Company, Pittsburgh then Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Exclusive truck manufacturer from the 1910s onward.
- 1953β1981 β Acquired by White Motor Company. Autocar continues producing trucks under the Autocar name within the White organization.
- 1981β1987 β White Motor Company goes bankrupt. Autocar sold to AB Volvo as part of the White acquisition by Volvo.
- 1987β2001 β Volvo ownership era. The Autocar Xpeditor WX and Volvo WX are sold simultaneously as nearly identical trucks. The bowtie logo is retired during this period.
- 2001βPresent β Volvo sells the Autocar brand, Xpeditor designs, and intellectual property to Grand Vehicle Works Holdings, LLC based in Highland Park, Illinois. Autocar, LLC is reestablished as an independent American-owned company. Manufacturing moves to Birmingham, Alabama. The ACX, ACMD, DC-64, and ACTT lines are developed and introduced under independent ownership.
Why Autocar Dominates the Refuse Market
Autocar’s dominance in the North American refuse truck chassis market is the result of engineering decisions made specifically for the work. The ACX cab-over design puts the driver directly over the front axle β maximizing visibility for the stop-every-30-feet refuse collection cycle and minimizing the truck’s turning radius in tight residential streets. The rivetless cab construction reduces maintenance. The integrated body controls allow the truck and body to communicate as a unified system rather than two separate components bolted together. The factory CNG option gives fleet operators direct access to natural gas powertrains without aftermarket modifications. And the custom-built-to-order model means every truck is optimized for the specific body, route, and duty cycle it will operate in β not a compromise configuration built for the broadest possible market.
