Powered by Nissan Diesel four-cylinder engines. Used in light delivery, small box truck, and urban service body applications. The smallest cab-over configuration in the UD range, competing against the Isuzu NPR in the Class 3 segment. Powered by the Nissan Diesel FE6 six-cylinder turbodiesel — a reliable and well-regarded engine that powers the 1800 through most of its production run. Available with Allison automatic and manual transmissions. Used extensively in box truck delivery, refrigerated, flatbed, and service body applications. The UD 1800 competes with the Isuzu NQR in the Class 5 segment and is very commonly found throughout the used truck market.

Powered by the Nissan Diesel FE6 turbodiesel. The 2300 is used extensively in beverage distribution, box truck, flatbed, dump, and refrigerated applications. Very common in the used market with good parts availability. The 2300 competes with the Isuzu NRR and Hino 268 in the Class 6 segment.

About UD Trucks in North America

UD Trucks — formerly known as Nissan Diesel Motor Co., Ltd. — was founded in Japan in 1935 as Minsei Diesel Industries. The company became a Nissan subsidiary in 1950 and was renamed Nissan Diesel in 1952. UD trucks began entering the North American market in the mid-1980s, sold under the UD model designation that indicated approximate payload capacity. The brand was well known in the U.S. under the “Nissan Diesel” name before formally rebranding to UD Trucks on February 1, 2010.

Volvo Group acquired a controlling stake in Nissan Diesel in 2007 and completed full ownership in subsequent years. UD Trucks is now a wholly owned Volvo Group company — a sibling brand to Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks. The North American market for UD trucks declined significantly after 2010 as Isuzu’s NPR/NQR/NRR lineup and Hino’s conventional cab trucks captured the Class 4–7 market. UD’s North American presence is now limited to parts and service support for the legacy fleet — new UD trucks are not currently sold through a U.S. dealer network.

UD Model Numbering System

UD trucks in North America were named using a four-digit number that indicated approximate GVWR in pounds, rounded to the nearest hundred:

  • UD 1200 — approximately 12,000 lbs GVWR — Class 3
  • UD 1300 — approximately 13,000 lbs GVWR — Class 3–4
  • UD 1400 — approximately 14,500 lbs GVWR — Class 4
  • UD 1800 / 1800 CS — approximately 18,000 lbs GVWR — Class 5
  • UD 2000 — approximately 20,000 lbs GVWR — Class 5–6
  • UD 2300 / 2300 DH / 2300 LP — approximately 23,000 lbs GVWR — Class 6
  • UD 2600 / 2600 LP — approximately 26,000 lbs GVWR — Class 6–7
  • UD 2800 — approximately 28,000 lbs GVWR — Class 7
  • UD 3000 — approximately 30,000 lbs GVWR — Class 7
  • UD 3300 — approximately 33,000 lbs GVWR — Class 7

UD & International — The Navistar Connection

For a period in the 1980s and 1990s, Navistar International purchased and sold rebadged UD (Nissan Diesel Condor) trucks as the International 400, 500, 600, 700, and 900 Series — with the largest Model 900 corresponding to the UD 3300. This arrangement gave UD trucks a second sales channel through International’s extensive North American dealer network. Buyers may find these trucks badged as either UD or International with identical mechanical specifications. We purchase all rebadged International/UD trucks in any condition.

UD Engine — The Nissan Diesel FE6

The majority of North American UD trucks from the 1800 through the 3300 are powered by the Nissan Diesel FE6 inline-six turbodiesel — a 6.9-liter engine available in naturally aspirated and turbocharged variants producing 160 to 230 HP depending on configuration. The FE6 is known for its durability and relatively straightforward maintenance compared to later common-rail engines. Lighter models (1200, 1300, 1400) use smaller Nissan Diesel four-cylinder engines. Parts availability for the FE6 remains reasonable through Nissan Diesel/UD parts suppliers in North America.
