Ram 1500 Gen 5 (DT)

Light Duty Full-Size Pickup 3.6L V6 / 5.7L Hemi / 3.0L EcoDiesel eTorque Available

The current 5th generation Ram 1500 launched for the 2019 model year on the DT platform. Wider than its predecessor but approximately 200 pounds lighter thanks to mixed-material construction. Features a fully coil-sprung rear suspension — unique among half-ton trucks — for the smoothest ride in the segment. Engine options include a 3.6L Pentastar V6, 5.7L Hemi V8, 3.0L EcoDiesel V6, and the eTorque mild-hybrid system on both the V6 and V8. The TRX high-performance variant (2021–2023) uses a supercharged 6.2L Hemi producing 702 HP. A significant update for 2025 introduced the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six as a new powertrain option.

Ram 1500 Gen 4 (DS)

Light Duty Full-Size Pickup 3.6L V6 / 5.7L Hemi / 3.0L EcoDiesel

The 4th generation Ram 1500 launched for the 2009 model year as a Dodge Ram, becoming the Ram 1500 with the 2012 model year when Dodge and Ram officially separated. This generation switched from leaf springs to a coil-spring rear suspension — a major comfort improvement. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 was added in 2014 — the first diesel in a half-ton Ram. The 5.7L Hemi received cylinder deactivation (MDS) during this generation. A “Classic” version of this generation continued in production alongside the Gen 5 through the 2022 model year for value-focused buyers.

Dodge Ram 1500 Gen 3 (DR)

Light Duty Full-Size Pickup 5.7L Hemi Introduced 4.7L / 5.9L Magnum V8

The 3rd generation Dodge Ram launched for the 2002 model year with refined styling that evolved the iconic 2nd gen big-rig look. Most importantly, the 5.7L Hemi V8 was introduced for the 2003 model year — one of the most significant engine launches in truck history. The modern Hemi’s combination of power, torque, and sound made it an immediate hit and remains the most iconic Ram engine. Available with 3.7L V6, 4.7L V8, 5.7L Hemi V8, and 5.9L Magnum V8. The SRT-10 performance variant with the 8.3L Viper V10 produced 500 HP.

Dodge Ram 1500 Gen 2 (BR/BE)

The 2nd generation Dodge Ram launched for the 1994 model year with the revolutionary “big-rig” styling that set the hood above the front fenders — a dramatic semi-truck inspired design that transformed the truck market. Sales doubled then doubled again. This generation single-handedly made Ram a serious competitor to Ford and GM for the first time. Powered by 3.9L V6, 5.2L Magnum V8, and 5.9L Magnum V8 engines. The Club Cab and Quad Cab body styles expanded to give buyers rear seating options.

Dodge Ram 1500 Gen 1 (D/W Series)

Light Duty Full-Size Pickup 3.7L / 5.2L / 5.9L V8 Crosshair Grille 1986

The first Dodge Ram, introduced for the 1981 model year as a lightly restyled version of the Dodge D-Series trucks that had been in production since 1972. The Ram name was officially applied to the pickup starting in 1981. A facelift in 1986 added the trademark crosshair grille that has appeared on Ram trucks ever since. Available in D-150 (half-ton), D-250 (three-quarter ton), and D-350 (one-ton) configurations with 2WD (D) and 4WD (W) versions. Powered by 3.7L six-cylinder, 5.2L, and 5.9L V8 engines.

Ram 1500 TRX

Light Duty Performance Off-Road 702 HP Supercharged 6.2L Hemi

The Ram 1500 TRX was produced from 2021 through 2023 as the most powerful production pickup truck ever sold in North America at the time of launch. Powered by a supercharged 6.2L Hemi V8 producing 702 HP and 650 lb-ft of torque — the same engine as the Dodge Hellcat. Features Bilstein adaptive dampers, 35-inch all-terrain tires, and a 2-inch factory lift. Limited to 702 units of the Final Edition for 2023. A significant collector vehicle already commanding premium prices in the used market.

Ram HD Gen 5 (DT/DJ)

Class 2–3 Heavy Duty Pickup 6.4L Hemi V8 6.7L Cummins — 1,075 lb-ft

The current 5th generation Ram HD launched for the 2019 model year with a completely redesigned exterior and interior. Powered by a 6.4L Hemi gasoline V8 (410 HP) or the 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel — available in standard output (370 HP / 850 lb-ft) or high-output (420 HP / 1,075 lb-ft with Aisin transmission) configurations. The 3500HD DRW with the high-output Cummins and Aisin transmission achieves class-leading conventional towing over 37,000 pounds. Available in regular cab, Quad Cab, and Crew Cab with 2500HD and 3500HD SRW and DRW configurations.

Ram HD Gen 4 (DJ/D2)

Class 2–3 Heavy Duty Pickup 5.7L Hemi / 6.4L Hemi 6.7L Cummins — 4th Gen

The 4th generation Ram HD launched for the 2010 model year with a completely new exterior and a significantly upgraded interior — introducing the Laramie Longhorn and Limited luxury trims that gave Ram a reputation for interior quality rivaling luxury brands. The Quad Cab was replaced by a full Crew Cab configuration. Powered by 5.7L Hemi V8, 6.4L Hemi V8 (added 2014), and the 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel producing up to 385 HP and 850 lb-ft by 2018. The 2013 model year brought a stronger frame and suspension revision. This is the most sought-after Cummins generation in the used market.

2003 — 2009

Dodge Ram HD Gen 3 (DR/DH)

Class 2–3 Heavy Duty Pickup 5.7L Hemi / 5.9L Magnum 5.9L Cummins → 6.7L Cummins

The 3rd generation Dodge Ram HD launched for the 2003 model year with updated styling and a common-rail fuel injection system on the 5.9L Cummins — a major improvement over the previous mechanical injection. The 5.9L Cummins (2003–2007) produced up to 325 HP and 600 lb-ft. The 6.7L Cummins replaced the 5.9L starting mid-2007. Gasoline options included the 5.7L Hemi and 5.9L Magnum V8. The 2003–2007 common-rail 5.9L Cummins trucks are highly sought after in the diesel enthusiast community.

Dodge Ram HD Gen 2 (BR/BE)

Class 2–3 Heavy Duty Pickup 5.9L Cummins 12V → 24V 5.9L Magnum V8

The 2nd generation Dodge Ram HD launched for the 1994 model year with the same revolutionary big-rig styling as the 1500. The 5.9L Cummins 12-valve mechanical diesel continued from the 1st generation (1994–1997), featuring the Bosch P7100 “P-pump” mechanical injection — the most tuneable and sought-after configuration. The 24-valve Cummins with electronic injection (VP44 pump) replaced the 12-valve in 1998. Early 24-valve trucks (1998.5–2002) had VP44 pump failure issues at higher mileage. The 12-valve 1994–1997 Cummins trucks command strong used market premiums.

Dodge Ram HD Gen 1 (D/W Series)

Class 2–3 Heavy Duty Pickup 5.9L Cummins 1st Gen D250 / D350 / W250 / W350

The original Cummins-powered Dodge Ram HD, produced from 1989 through 1993 in D250, D350 (2WD) and W250, W350 (4WD) configurations. The 5.9L Cummins 6BT inline-six — with a fixed geometry Holset turbocharger and Bosch VE rotary injection pump — produced best-in-class 400 lb-ft of torque in an era when the competition offered far less. An intercooler was added mid-1991. These mechanically simple, overbuilt trucks are legendary for longevity — many examples are still in daily use at extremely high mileage. Ram’s chassis cab lineup for body upfitting. The Ram 3500 chassis cab is the heaviest-duty single-rear-wheel pickup configuration. The Ram 4500 (Class 4) and Ram 5500 (Class 5) are dedicated medium duty chassis cabs introduced for the 2008 model year for service body, flatbed, crane, and specialty upfit applications. 1st Gen Cummins — 5.9L 6BT

D250 / D350 / W250 / W350 160 HP / 400 lb-ft VE Rotary Pump

The original Cummins 5.9L 6BT with Bosch VE rotary pump. Intercooler added mid-1991. Legendary for mechanical simplicity and longevity — no complex electronics, no emissions equipment. Many examples still in daily use at 400,000+ miles. Paired with 4-speed A727 automatic or Getrag 5-speed manual. These trucks are increasingly collectible due to their simplicity and durability.

1994 — 1998

2nd Gen Cummins — 5.9L 12-Valve

Ram 2500 / 3500 215 HP / 440 lb-ft P7100 P-Pump

The 5.9L 12-valve Cummins with the Bosch P7100 mechanical injection pump — widely considered the most desirable Cummins configuration. The P-pump is the most tuneable and bulletproof injection system ever put in a diesel truck. Combined with the new big-rig styling of the 2nd gen Ram, these trucks have the most devoted following of any diesel pickup. Paired with NV4500 5-speed manual or 47RH/47RE automatic. Excellent examples command significant premiums in the used market.

2nd Gen Cummins — 5.9L 24-Valve

Ram 2500 / 3500 235–245 HP / 460–505 lb-ft VP44 Electronic Pump

The 5.9L 24-valve Cummins with Bosch VP44 electronic injection, introduced mid-1998. More power than the 12-valve but the VP44 pump is a known weak point — failures are common above 150,000 miles without preventive maintenance. An APPS (Accelerator Position Sensor) failure is another common issue. Still a capable and popular truck; buyers should verify VP44 condition. Paired with NV5600 6-speed manual or 47RE/48RE automatic.

2003 — 2007

3rd Gen Cummins — 5.9L Common Rail

Ram 2500 / 3500 305–325 HP / 555–600 lb-ft Common Rail Injection

The 5.9L Cummins with common-rail high-pressure fuel injection — a major leap in refinement, fuel economy, and power over the VP44 generation. Significantly smoother and quieter than previous Cummins engines. Paired with the NV5600 manual or 48RE automatic. The final year of the 5.9L Cummins before the 6.7L took over. The 2003–2007 Cummins is a fan favorite combining old-school simplicity with modern fuel delivery. Highly sought after in the used market.

2007.5 — 2018

4th Gen Cummins — 6.7L ISB

Ram 2500 / 3500 350–385 HP / 650–900 lb-ft DPF / DEF System

The 6.7L Cummins ISB debuted mid-2007 and is the most popular diesel engine in Ram’s history. Larger displacement, more power, and higher torque than the 5.9L. Introduced modern emissions equipment — DPF (2007.5–2012) and DEF/SCR (2013+). Power grew from 350 HP / 650 lb-ft to 385 HP / 900 lb-ft by 2018. The 2013–2018 trucks are particularly sought after for their improved interior quality alongside the capable Cummins powertrain. Paired with 6-speed 68RFE automatic or Aisin AS69RC automatic on high-output configurations.

5th Gen Cummins — 6.7L ISB

Ram 2500 / 3500 370–420 HP 850–1,075 lb-ft

The current 5th generation 6.7L Cummins produces 370 HP and 850 lb-ft in standard output (68RFE 6-speed automatic) or 420 HP and 1,075 lb-ft in high-output form (Aisin AS69RC 6-speed automatic) — the most powerful Cummins ever offered in a Ram pickup. The 3500HD DRW with the high-output Cummins and Aisin achieves class-leading conventional towing over 37,000 pounds. Ram’s 5th generation trucks also feature significantly improved interior quality and technology over previous generations.

Dakota Gen 3

Mid-Size Pickup 3.7L V6 / 4.7L V8 Final Year: Ram Dakota 2011

The 3rd generation Dakota launched for the 2005 model year with updated styling and a revised powertrain lineup. The 3.7L V6 (210 HP) and 4.7L V8 (310 HP) were the only engine options. The final 2011 model year was marketed as the Ram Dakota rather than Dodge Dakota as Ram separated from Dodge — the Dodge emblem still appeared on the tailgate. Production ended in 2011 and was not replaced in North America. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup ever offered with an optional V8 engine when introduced in 1987.

Mid-Size Pickup 2.5L I4 / 3.9L V6 / 4.7L / 5.9L V8 Club Cab & Quad Cab

The 2nd generation Dakota launched for the 1997 model year with significantly updated styling matching the new 2nd gen Ram 1500 big-rig look. The Quad Cab four-door configuration was added in 2000, making the Dakota one of the few mid-size trucks with a full four-door option. Available with 2.5L four-cylinder, 3.9L V6, 4.7L V8, and 5.9L Magnum V8. The Dakota R/T performance variant with the 5.9L Magnum V8 and sport suspension is a sought-after collector truck.

Dakota Gen 1

Mid-Size Pickup 2.2L / 2.5L I4 / 3.9L V6 / 5.2L V8 First Mid-Size V8

The original Dakota launched for the 1987 model year as Dodge’s mid-size pickup, positioned between the compact Ram 50 and the full-size Ram 1500. The first mid-size pickup ever offered with an optional V8 — the 5.2L Magnum V8 — a significant differentiator from the Ford Ranger and Chevy S-10 competition. Available in regular cab and Club Cab extended cab configurations with 2WD and 4WD. The Dakota quickly developed a reputation for being tougher and more capable than compact mid-size competitors.

Ram’s full-size front-wheel-drive cargo van, introduced for the 2014 model year. Based on the Fiat Ducato platform, the ProMaster offers the highest roof height of any full-size van and a low step-in height. Available in 1500, 2500, and 3500 payload ratings with cargo van, window van, and cutaway configurations. Widely used in last-mile delivery, mobile service, and fleet applications. Ram’s compact cargo van, introduced for the 2015 model year and based on the Fiat Doblò platform. About RAM Trucks

Ram Trucks is a division of Stellantis North America, established as a standalone brand in 2009 when Chrysler separated its truck and commercial vehicle lineup from the Dodge brand. Before 2010, all Ram pickups were sold as Dodge Ram. The Ram 1500 is consistently the third best-selling vehicle in the United States, and the Ram 2500 and 3500 with the Cummins turbodiesel are among the most desired used trucks in the heavy duty market.

Ram trucks are manufactured at the Sterling Heights Assembly plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan (Ram 1500) and the Saltillo Truck Assembly plant in Saltillo, Mexico (Ram HD). The Ram brand has positioned itself as the most interior-focused and comfort-oriented of the three domestic truck brands, particularly with the Laramie Longhorn and Limited luxury trim levels that brought near-luxury-vehicle interior quality to the pickup segment.

Dodge Ram / Ram Brand Naming History

  • 1917–1980 — Dodge trucks sold under various designations including the D-Series (1948–1980).
  • 1981–2009 — Dodge Ram branding. The Ram name was introduced for the 1981 model year, with “Dodge Ram” as the official designation.
  • 2009 — Ram Trucks established as a standalone division by Chrysler, separate from Dodge.
  • 2010 — First model year sold under the Ram brand alone (though badged as Dodge Ram through 2011).
  • 2012 — First model year officially sold and marketed as Ram 1500, Ram 2500, Ram 3500 without the Dodge name.
  • 2011 — Dakota sold as Ram Dakota in its final year — the last Dodge-branded truck.

The Cummins Partnership — Ram’s Most Important Relationship

The partnership between Dodge/Ram and Cummins Inc. that began in 1989 is one of the most important in American truck history. The 5.9L Cummins inline-six transformed Dodge’s heavy duty truck lineup from an also-ran into the diesel benchmark. While Ford and GM used V8 diesel engines from Detroit Diesel and Navistar, the Cummins inline-six offered superior torque characteristics, simpler maintenance, and legendary durability. The 12-valve Cummins (1989–1998) in particular developed a following that persists to this day, with P-pump 1994–1997 examples commanding premiums over newer trucks. Over 35 years, the Cummins has grown from 160 HP and 400 lb-ft to 420 HP and 1,075 lb-ft while maintaining its reputation for longevity.
