In New York the maximum gross weight is 80,000 lb, the ceiling on total weight for a vehicle or combination having three axles or more, and a vehicle whose engine is fuelled primarily by natural gas may reach 82,000 lb (N.Y. Veh. & Traf. Law § 385(10)). In New York the weight on any one axle is 22,400 lb, where the federal maximum for a single axle is 20,000 lb (N.Y. Veh. & Traf. Law § 385(8)). In New York the weight on two consecutive axles under eight feet apart is 36,000 lb, where the federal maximum for a tandem is 34,000 lb (N.Y. Veh. & Traf. Law § 385(9)).
Four separate routes to the same brand
The title is the other half, and New York’s salvage rule has an unusually wide door. Four routes reach the same brand. A vehicle is salvage if an insurer takes it on a salvage certificate after significant damage from collision, theft, vandalism or water; or if repair costs exceed seventy-five per cent of its pre-damage retail value; or if another state issued it a salvage title and it was brought in; or if the owner declared it a wreck on the back of the New York title at transfer. The percentage test applies to a vehicle eight model years old or newer — New Hampshire stops at four years, Missouri and Nebraska at six, Arkansas at seven. For an older working truck that window decides whether the percentage reaches the vehicle at all. Once applied, the brand stays on the title for as long as the vehicle exists, and the DMV must examine a rebuilt vehicle for stolen parts before it can be registered or titled.
